“I didn’t mean to do that,” I said, my voice breathy.

“I’m glad you did. Does this mean you aren’t mad at me?”

“Why would I be mad at you?”

“For crashing your date. And I don’t really want to make a list, but all the other stuff.”

I smiled. “I’m not mad at you.”

“Good.”

“Besides, I’m the one who kept dating that jerk even after you told me how you felt.”

“I guess we’ll call it even.” He grinned and brushed another soft kiss across my lips. “Are you okay?”

“So much better.”

“For the record, I really want to burn down that asshole’s life. But I’ll try to be a responsible adult and let the authorities handle it.”

“I’m sure that’s for the best. Did you really get fired?”

“Yeah, I think Preston figured out I was a threat. Joke’s on him though; I was about to quit.”

“Are you going to be okay?”

“I’ll be fine. I don’t think my new girlfriend expects caviar and diamonds.”

I leaned back. “New girlfriend?”

“Too soon?” There was that cocky half-grin of his. “You can call me your boyfriend anytime. I’m not afraid of commitment.”

“I don’t know what to do with you.”

“Just let me kiss you again. I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time.”

With a smile, I tilted my chin up. His lips met mine, soft at first, then demanding. I sank into his kiss, reveling in the strength of his arms around me.

Nothing had ever felt so right.

Eventually, my thoughts drifted back to reality—specifically to the time. My entire morning had slipped away, and I had clients to think about.

“I need to get to work,” I said reluctantly.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea? You’ve had one hell of a morning.”

“I’d rather not reschedule everyone. Things are tight already and I can’t afford to lose clients.” I paused, a spark of defiance flaring to life deep inside me. “And you know what? I’m not going to let him hurt me like that. He won’t ruin my day.”

Zachary smiled, then leaned in to kiss my forehead. “You’re amazing.”

I gazed at him. He meant that. He was proud of me. And at that moment, it was exactly what I needed to hear.

“I’m coming with you, though,” he added.

“To the salon? Why?”

“Until Garrett tells me the douchebag is in custody, I’m not leaving you alone.”

“You don’t have to do that.”
