What was happening?

The girl returned with a glass of water. She handed it to me and I took a careful sip.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

I put the glass on a side table. The girl eyed me with an odd expression, her brow slightly furrowed and her lips pressed together.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Brielle.”

I gaped at her. “Brielle Thayer? From Tilikum?”

She nodded.

“Is this where you’ve been?” I glanced around, as if that would tell me something about why I was sitting in a loft with a missing teenager.

“Mostly. John brought me.”

“Did John take you like he took me?”

She shook her head. “No. He gave me a ride. Told me I could stay here for a while until I figured things out.”

I wished I understood what she was talking about, but I couldn’t quite string my thoughts together.

“I thought he was a good guy, but I don’t think he is anymore,” she said, her voice lowering to a whisper. “I don’t know why he wants you, but I know why he wants me. It isn’t good. But I don’t know how to get away.”

Fear tightened my chest again and made my throat dry. Who was John? Who had taken me? Had I imagined it was Preston?

What was going on?

“We’re going to get out of here.” I didn’t know how, but I had to hear myself say it. “We’re going to get away. Okay?”

She nodded. It was hard to tell in the dark, but it seemed like she had tears in her eyes.

Poor thing.

I scooted to the edge of the bed and swung my legs over. “How long have I been here?”

“A few hours.”

My stomach protested again and I had to pause to breathe through it. A few hours. That meant Zachary was already looking for me.

If I knew Zachary, it meant half the town was already looking for me.

“Okay,” I said. “Do you know where we are? In relation to Tilikum?”

“I’m not sure, but I know it’s far.”

“Well, we’ll figure it out.”

“No.”

I looked up. “Why not?”

“He locked us in.”
