Locked in. What did she mean we were locked in? I’d have to try the doors and windows for myself to be sure. I didn’t know if I could actually trust this girl. Whoever John was, he’d apparently had her in this cabin for quite a while. She seemed afraid, but it could be an act.

“John didn’t say when he was coming back?”

“He just said soon.”

I took a breath to steady myself, then tried standing. My legs were weak, but I could stay upright. And I didn’t vomit. That was good.

A noise came from downstairs and Brielle’s eyes widened. Without a word, she dashed down the stairs.

The door opened, letting in the sound of the storm outside. I’d never been so terrified. I could hardly breathe. My body was so weak and I was stuck; there was nowhere to go.

A man’s voice drifted up into the loft. He spoke low, too quiet for me to hear what he was saying.

A moment later, footsteps. I swayed on my feet. With nowhere to go, I decided to sit on the edge of the bed. That might give me a better chance of remaining conscious.

Oh my god. It was Preston.

“Good, you’re awake.”

I stared at him, my lips parted. I didn’t know what to say, where to begin.

He came closer and reached out, trying to brush the hair back from my face, but I flinched away.

“It’s okay, beautiful,” he said, his tone soothing. “You’ll feel better soon.”

“Where am I?”

“It’s a little cabin I happen to own. Not my most impressive property, I admit, but it’s useful.”

“You abducted me.”

“That’s how it appears now. But in time, you’ll come to see things my way.”

“It doesn’t appear that you abducted me. You did. You drugged me.”

“I’m sorry about that. I know it’s disconcerting. But it was better for you.”

This man was delusional.

He sat on the bed next to me and tried to take my hand, but I pulled away. “Marigold, you’re going to have to understand, when I want something, I get it. No matter what it is, no matter the cost. I’ve gotten to where I am in life because I don’t take no for an answer. Ever. And what I want now is you.”

I shook my head slowly. “We hardly know each other. We only went out a handful of times.”

“Doesn’t matter.” He took my hand, this time holding it so tight I couldn’t draw away. “I decided you were mine the first time I met you. And nothing and no one is going to take you from me.”

“I told you I didn’t want to see you anymore.”

His dark eyes were hard as steel. “You will want me. I’m going to make sure of it.”

“You can’t do this. You can’t keep me here.”

He kept my hand in a tight grip. “Of course I can.”

“This is crazy. What do you think is going to happen? You’re going to keep me locked up in some cabin and eventually I’m going to fall in love with you?”

The corner of his mouth turned up. “Believe me, it won’t be a problem.”

“You’re delusional.”
