And then the weirdest thing happened. He blinked and a flash of alarm crossed his features. He looked past us, at the open cabin door, his eyes widening. “Oh, fuck.”

Garrett let me go, and while I still wanted to kill the fucker, I was too confused to go at him. Yet. “What?”

Preston jogged by, giving us a wide berth, and went to the front door. He touched the dismantled gate latch, then barreled his way in.

Garrett followed with me close on his heels. We watched Preston tear through the cabin, swearing under his breath.

I lowered my voice. “What the fuck is happening?”

“I don’t know,” Garrett said. “But I don’t think he knows I’m a cop.”

“Let’s keep it that way.”

“That piece of shit.” Preston’s voice rose as he stormed outside. “I never should have trusted him.”

“Who? Where’s Marigold?”

Garrett and I followed him outside. He stopped, and when he turned, I almost flinched away. His face was red and I’d be lying if I said his expression didn’t scare me a little. It would have scared any man with half a brain. He wasn’t simply angry, he was unhinged.

“Fucking Drew.” Preston practically spat out the words. “He has her.”

“Who the hell is Drew?”

“My partner. He’s the only one who knows this place exists.”

“Are you saying you abducted Marigold and then your fucking partner abducted her from you?”

“I didn’t abduct her,” Preston snapped. “I brought her home.”

“Oh great, he’s batshit,” I muttered. “This will be fun.”

“Careful,” Garrett said, his voice low. “We don’t know if he’s armed.”

At this point, I didn’t give a shit whether or not he was armed, although I probably should have. “Where would Drew take her?”

He let out a breath and shook his head slowly. “He’s trying to get rid of her.”

The hit of fear almost knocked me over. “Is he going to kill her?”

“No. Too messy. And there’s no money in it. He’ll offload her to one of our runners. In forty-eight hours, she’ll be in Moscow. Maybe Bogata, I don’t know. Depends on which container she ends up in.”

“He’s going to fucking sell her?” I shouted, not quite believing what I’d just said.

“He’ll try. It makes sense. He thinks she’s too big of a risk to keep. I never should have left her here. Fuck.”

“Fuck is right, you psycho piece of shit.” Garrett tried to stop me, but I wasn’t done. “You’re going to take us to them. Now.”

He hesitated, his eyes on me. This wasn’t the Preston I remembered from the job site. That man had been tightly controlled—and totally in charge. This guy had a wildness in his eyes, like one wrong step and he’d lose it.

I knew that look. I’d worn it many times. Usually right before I did something stupid, like punch a guy in the face in front of my cop brother.

A guy like that—about to lose control—was dangerous. But he could also be manipulated. I just had to turn the tables and be the one to stay calm.

Not my best skill, I admit, but I could do anything if it would save Marigold.

I had a hunch about him and I just hoped I was right. I took the intensity out of my voice. “You have a choice. Show us where he’s taking her. Or let him keep her. Which means you lose.”

The flash of fury that rippled across his features told me I’d nailed it. This guy couldn’t stand losing. He was going to help us rescue Marigold, even if only to make sure he won.
