I had no idea what we were going to do about him after that. Obviously he wasn’t going to just let us take Marigold home. But one thing at a time. Especially since he’d just said his partner was taking her to be fucking sold.

I could see Preston weighing his options. There were two of us, one of him. I was betting he wasn’t armed, otherwise he would have gone for his weapon already. He was trying to decide if he wanted to try to take us out now, or after we got Marigold.

“Fine.” He adjusted his jacket, but the gesture did nothing to calm the ferocity in his eyes. If anything, his buttoned-up exterior made him look crazier. Those eyes didn’t look right in that face. “Follow me.”

“Where are we going?” Garrett asked.

“Pasco,” he said, and got in his car.

“What the fuck is in Pasco?” Garrett asked as we got in my truck.

A sick feeling spread through my stomach. “A port. It’s right on the Columbia.”

“That’s got to be like five hours from here.”

I turned around and started down the road, following Preston. “Probably.”

“Do you actually think he’s going to take us to her?”

“He’s not thinking straight. I can see it in his eyes. So yeah, I do think he’s going to take us to her.”

I glanced at my brother. He wasn’t acting like Garrett the cop. That guy wouldn’t have let Preston get in his car, let alone agree to follow the psycho five hours south hoping he’d lead us to my abducted girlfriend.

“Are you going to get fired for this?”

“Maybe.”

“Then why didn’t you arrest him back there or something?”

“Because, God help me, I think you’re right. He’s the only chance we have of finding Marigold before it’s too late.” He turned to look at me. “I’ll break every fucking rule in the book if that’s what it takes to get her back.”

Damn. Maybe my brother wasn’t a robot after all.

I nodded. He nodded back. And for once in our lives, we understood each other.

Preston’s partner was going to put her in a shipping container. If he managed that, finding her would be basically impossible. And if Preston was right, in a few days, she’d be long gone.

Once again, Garrett and I drove in silence. We didn’t try to figure out what we were going to do with Preston once we found Marigold.

One thing at a time. Find her. Then figure out the rest.

Only Marigold mattered.

CHAPTER 38

Marigold

We’d been in the car for hours, and I still had no idea where we were going. Drew drove exactly the speed limit, slowed through every town the highway passed through, and even stopped once for gas. Naturally, he threatened to kill us if we tried anything, and the empty gas station in the middle of nowhere wasn’t going to do us much good anyway.

I held Brielle close, doing my best to give her what little comfort I could. Her body was stiff with terror but she hardly made a sound. If there were tears to be cried, they’d come later. I had a feeling the poor girl was going to need an awful lot of therapy if we ever got out of this.

My eyes grew heavy as the miles passed. I’d been rendered unconscious, but that didn’t really count as sleep. My mouth was dry with thirst and I had no idea when I’d last eaten. It was hard to tell if the knots in my stomach were fear, hunger, or maybe a bit of both.

But mostly fear.

I shifted to ease the pressure on my hip and readjusted my arm around Brielle. Drew’s eyes flicked to me in the rearview mirror.

For the first time since the cabin, I spoke up. “Where are you taking us?”
