Bradford glanced at his phone. “No time. I have to fly back to Seattle.”

“Fair enough. When should we expect you back?”

“I’ll be back and forth all week. I have things to see to here.”

They kept talking but I stopped listening. I felt like such an idiot. I should have known. Of course the guy with enough bank to fly Marigold to Seattle in a private helicopter was the same guy building the monstrosity of a mansion I was working on.

I eyed him and my jaw hitched. Something was off about him, and it wasn’t just the fact that he was trying to take my woman. Granted, that was enough to make me hate him, but my gut told me something was wrong. I couldn’t explain what. I just knew.

My body practically shook with the desire to do something obnoxious. To saunter up to the guy and tell him I was going to steal Marigold right out from under him. It would probably get me fired, but it would be worth it.

Something made me stop. I’d love to think it was reason and maturity overpowering my smartass instincts. But it wasn’t. I just figured the longer Preston went without knowing who I was, and that I intended to crush him, the better. I could get away with more if I didn’t get in his face.

Yet.

So I got in my truck, just another electrician heading home after a long day on the job site. I didn’t call attention to myself and the prick didn’t look, as if I were beneath his notice.

Worked for me. Before this was all over, he’d know it was me. He’d know it was a small-town, blue-collar guy who’d beaten him.

As soon as I was back on the highway, I called Annika.

“Hey, Z,” she answered.

“What’s the helicopter guy’s name? The one who took Marigold out.”

“Preston?”

“Yeah but what’s his last name?”

“Why?”

“I just need to know.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Other than steal Marigold from him?”

“Z, it’s bad enough I gave you Mari’s number. I can’t keep helping you.”

“All I’m asking for is the guy’s last name. Is it Bradford?”

She hesitated. “Yes.”

“I knew it. Thanks, sis.”

“Please don’t do anything crazy.”

I grinned. “Come on, this is me we’re talking about.”

“Hence my concern.”

“Trust me. I’ve got this.”

“Wait. Before you do anything, run it by Garrett first.”

“Why would I do that?”

“So you don’t get yourself into trouble.”
