“So send her better flowers,” Luke said.

“That’s not going to help. And before you say it, I know I can’t keep up with a guy with deep pockets. What am I going to do to compete with a private helicopter?”

Theo started to smile. “What if…? No.”

“What?”

“I was just thinking, what if she has a date with him but he has to cancel at the last minute. She’d be pretty disappointed.”

My eyebrows lifted as I realized what he was getting at. “And I could swoop in to make her feel better.”

“You won’t have to stalk her, since she’ll probably be home if her date cancels,” Theo said. “And the other guy will be out of the way.”

“I like where this is going,” I said.

“But how will you know if he has to cancel a date?” Luke asked.

I grinned at him.

“Oh,” Luke said. “I see what you mean.”

I knew my instinct was right. Luke and Theo did have my back. And so would he. This was totally his area.

As if on cue, the door opened and Gavin Bailey walked in. Our eyes met and we tipped our chins.

Luke looked slightly concerned as Gavin came over to our table. I didn’t blame him. I’d been the last holdout when it came to the feud with the Baileys, and Gavin and I had almost come to blows more times than I could count. We were both a little hot headed.

Gavin had calmed down a lot since becoming a husband and father, but I hoped he’d jump at a chance to go back to his pranking roots, only this time with a new target.

He spun a chair around and straddled it backward. “Hey, jerks.”

Luke raised his eyebrows at me. “Did you call him?”

“I told him I need help getting rid of an asshole who’s trying to steal my girl. He said he was interested.”

“You know she’s not really your girl, right?” Theo asked.

“Can we focus?” I turned to Gavin. “As much as it hurts me to say this, and I mean causes physical pain, I need your help.”

“Why me?” Gavin asked.

“Because you’re the only guy I know who’s as crazy as I am.” I shrugged.

A slow smile spread over Gavin’s face. “All right. Let’s do this.”

CHAPTER 15

Marigold

A hint of nervousness spread through my stomach as I got ready. It wasn’t a last-minute date this time, but I also didn’t know if we’d be meeting up with Preston’s friends again. His friends had seemed nice enough, and I didn’t have any reason to avoid them, but I had an odd feeling I couldn’t seem to shake.

I put on lipstick and pressed my lips together. I hadn’t even spent an entire meal with Drew and Tess. How could I come to any conclusions? I knew very little about them, so why did the thought of spending an evening with them make me so anxious?

My phone rang. It was Preston.

“Hi,” I answered.

“Hi— Hang on.” His voice got slightly muffled, as if he was holding the phone away from himself. “How the hell should I know? Do something about it.”
