I don’t know if you read my textsand I promise this is not me reneging on my word to leave youalone.

I know you are still mad at me,and with good reason. Trust me, I am even more mad at myself.

This is about Thanksgiving. I knowyou’re going to see your family and I know it can be prettystressful for you. I am offering to help you in any way youwish.

I could take care of the catswhile you’re gone, since I know Liz and Joe will be out of town.I’m happy to have them over at my place, if that’s more comfortablefor you.

Or, if you’re willing (though Idoubt you are, and I understand), I would still love to go with youand meet your family. You can introduce me as your idiot neighbor. We could even take the cats with us, they could stay with me at thehotel.

I am sorry for messing everythingup, Roxie.

I am sorry for how I spoke to you.You deserved none of it.

It has come to my attention thatI’m full of shit, which might not surprise you, but it turns outsome of the shit is serious enough that it requires professionalhelp. Which I’m getting.

I am very sorry I hurt you. What Isaid then doesn’t reflect how I see you, or how I feel about you. Ireally miss you.

For now, please let me know if Ican help you out in some way.

Love,

C.

Well, shit.

It’s late morning on ThanksgivingThursday. I’ve bought a food dispenser with a timer for Scylla andCharybdis, so they should be good through tomorrow.

“It’s not too late to change yourmind,” Chris says, as we get settled in his car. “I could stay homewith them.”

“No, it’s fine. It will befine.”

“You don’t seem convinced.”

“I’ve never left them alonebefore. I always had Liz and Joe to fall back on.”

“We will be back no later thantomorrow afternoon. That’s less than 48 hours. And just in case wedon’t, for whatever reason, you’ve got that colleague lined up tocheck up on them.”

I shiver. “I’ve never had her inmy apartment before. I’d really prefer not to have to callher.”

“Roxie, seriously, I can stay withthem.”

“No, no. I need you with me. It’llbe okay.”

He starts the car. “Are you sureyou don’t want to drive?”

“Of course not. You have to takeyour fancy new 4WD on a road trip.”

“I barely know where we’regoing.”

“All the more reason to drive. Atrue Midwesterner doesn’t fly anywhere that’s less than fifteenhours by car.”

He shakes his head and shifts from“park” into reverse. “Midwesterners are insane.”

I grin. “You’re one of usnow.”

“Seriously,” he says as he brieflyturns to me, “I have virtually no experience driving in the snow.My male ego has no problem letting you do this.”
