“Maybe. Or, we can be fae royalty, complete with pointy ears and fancy clothes. Or, you can put on some pale makeup and sparkles, and you can be the vampire and I’ll be the human you can’t resist. Or…”

He patted my thigh. “We can come up with as many ideas as we like. As long as you’re having fun and are happy, that’s all that matters to me.”

Silence fell a few beats and then I blurted, “I hope you know I forgive you for that night.”

He grimaced. “Maybe, but I still blame myself.”

“Don’t, Nolan. I mean, you were literally kidnapped. That’s one of a handful of acceptable excuses for ditching me at the charity event. Right alongside picking up a magic-filled artifact that sends you back in time, rescuing kittens from a burning shelter, or accidentally falling down a well.”

“A well?”

“Hey, you’re older than me. I’m sure you watched old Lassie reruns as a kid.”

“I’ll try my best not to fall down a well, baby. That should be easy.”

“You say that, but you never know…”

He tickled my side briefly, and I laughed.

Nolan said, “Life will never be boring with you, which is another thing I love.”

I touched his hand. “You didn’t exactly have a boring life before, though.”

“Maybe boring isn’t the right word. No, I was lonely.” He glanced at me with love in his eyes. “But never again.”

“No, never again.”

We smiled at each other and then Nolan had to concentrate on the winding road leading to his house. As soon as we arrived, he helped me out of the car, and we walked up the front steps. I said, “You really should bring your family here. Well, here and to your place in Malibu.”

“I’m working on it. But I’m rather grateful they don’t know about my home in Starry Hills right this second. That means we won’t be interrupted.”

He stopped me from entering the house. “Let me carry you, baby. I want to start out the way I mean to go on—supporting you when you need it, and loving you so much I want to be as close as possible to you whenever I can.”

“I’ll be here for you too, although don’t ask me to carry you. I’m not sure I could manage that.”

“Maybe you could if they invent super exoskeleton armor like in the superhero movies.”

He winked, and I giggled. “I wouldn’t mind seeing you in tights.”

He nipped my bottom lip. “I love you, Katie.”

“I love you, too, Nolan.”

Then he scooped me up and carried me up the stairs. My heart pounded for so many reasons. Not just because I was going to have sex with Nolan again, although that was definitely a plus. No, it was because I was going to do it with the man I loved.

Blindfolded.

I could hardly wait.

Chapter Forty-One

Nolan

Aunt Lori: You’re in town and didn’t stop by?

Me: I see the gossip chain is working.

Aunt Lori: Don’t change the subject. Where are you, Nolan?
