Cassie shook her head. “Kyle’s always been the golden child, though. I swear, he can do no wrong in Mom’s eyes.”

“Kyle has his faults, and one day they’ll catch up with him, I’m sure. For now, you can help me plan the best way to tell Mom about me and Nolan. I want to make it dramatic. It’s hard to make Mom speechless, but I’m going to try.”

As my sister and I put our heads together, I started to enjoy this fake dating and soon-to-be engagement thing.

My sister seemed on my side. And I’d barely uttered the words before my mother hugged me and started talking about wedding bells.

I did feel a little guilty about when I’d have to tell her Nolan and I were finished.

Think of your trip. Yes, maybe I’d meet some hot, smart, kind guy on my travels.

More than that, I needed the trip for myself. To maybe figure out my life. To finally stop wondering what if and start making plans.

And by the end of the day, I was more confident about pretending to be Nolan’s girlfriend. But the true test would be Thanksgiving.

I was both eager and anxious for it to arrive.

Chapter Six

Nolan

Katie: Are you sure about this?

Me: Yes, surprising my family will be the best option.

Katie: I think you just didn’t want them to interrogate you for days alone.

Me: Maybe. You’ve never suffered Aunt Lori’s interrogations before.

Katie: The world-famous movie star is afraid of his nearly retired-aged aunt?

Me: Yes. Sometimes. We all are.

Katie: I definitely need to learn Aunt Lori’s secrets. As a fellow short person, I could use the tips.

Me: You’re not that short.

Katie: Says the six-foot-something guy.

Me: I never noticed your stature. Your personality is always front and center.

Katie: Wait, are you saying I’m too much or over-the-top?

Me: Er, no…just lively.

Katie: And lively is good?

Me: Yes. I’m jealous, actually.

Katie: Jealous of me? Why?

Me (typed but deleted): Because you charm strangers in a way I never could.

Me (actual reply instead): You have access to Kyle’s cheeses whenever you want…

Katie: You’re the worst.

Me: But you’re still coming to Thanksgiving, right?
