It was the please that did it. After all, Nolan would be buying whatever dress I needed. He should see it first.

“It’s unlocked.”

I kept my gaze on my reflection and avoided his eyes.

Nolan growled. “Fuck, you’re so beautiful, baby.”

I met his gaze in the mirror. At the heat and desire there, I blinked.

He then frowned. “Why are your eyes red? What happened?”

Shaking my head, I replied, “It’s nothing.”

Nolan came up behind me, placed his hands on my hips, and nuzzled my cheek with his own. “Tell me what’s wrong. You’re mine to protect, and I can’t help you if you don’t talk to me.”

I tried to smile. “Yours to protect, huh?”

“You know what I mean. I’m not about to feed you to the wolves here.” He squeezed my hips. “So, is it the dress? We can find another one, if you want.”

“No, I love it. But it’s just that…”

“Just what?”

I sighed. “Well, I didn’t know we were going shopping, and so I don’t have my shapewear on, and I started thinking about what Wendy’s fans would say about me.”

“Fuck those people.” He pulled me back against him, against his hard cock, and he whispered, “You drive me crazy, baby. So much so, if I didn’t think we’d get caught, I’d sit you down, toss up those skirts, and make you cry out my name as you came on my tongue.”

I turned around in his arms. “Nolan.”

He leaned his forehead against mine. “People like Wendy and her diehard fans will only ever see flaws—both in themselves and in others. But I don’t want a fiancée who only feels better about herself when she puts down others. No, I want a woman who makes me laugh and knows I like books and doesn’t try to mold me into something I’m not. And that’s you, baby. You’re the one I picked.”

If only he’d picked me for real. “But you only have me for six months.”

He leaned back and searched my gaze. As we stared at one another, Nolan’s expression turned tender. Cupping my cheek, he murmured, “You’re so damn beautiful in this dress, Katie. Trust me, I’ll have to growl and glare at the others to keep them away.”

He’d changed the subject, but I still smiled and decided a lighter mood was better. “Would you snarl, too?”

“Maybe. I have great teeth and should show them off.”

He made a snarling face, and I laughed.

Nolan caressed my cheek. “There. Much better. Not as good as you crying out my name, but a close second.” He stood back. “Now, do a little twirl for me.”

“Twirl?”

He looked a little sheepish. “Yes. It’s a fantasy I never knew I had, even if you’re not naked.”

I moved away, met his gaze again, and then lifted my arms above my head and twirled a few times, before slowing down and stopping. “Well?”

“It’d be even better if you were naked.”

“Nolan!”

Maybe he’d been just like me, dreaming every night of when we’d finally sleep together. I eyed the bench, was tempted even, but ultimately decided I didn’t want our first time to be in public.

Well, our first and only time.

Don’t think of that now.
