“It’s one of my guilty pleasures. There’s something about French fries and a burger from the Golden Arches that can’t be beat.”

Antonio merely raised his brows before smiling at Katie. “Anything in particular you want for breakfast?”

“Um, French toast and bacon?”

“Consider it done. Come visit me in the kitchen or my office anytime, Ms. Evans.”

“Call me Katie, please.”

“Katie then.”

As Antonio flashed a smile—one that Katie returned—I clenched my fingers into fists. Even though I knew Antonio had a fiancée and wasn’t a threat, jealousy roared through me.

The sooner I could woo Katie for real, the better.

Once we were alone and both sitting on the blanket spread over the sand, I removed the dish covers and was instantly hit with the scent of lemon and garlic.

Katie gasped. “That’s fancier than any pasta I’ve ever had in my life.”

It was creamy lemon garlic shrimp pasta. “This was the dish that led me to hiring him. My guess is he wants to win you over, too.”

After picking up a fork, Katie twirled the pasta and slid it between her lips. She closed her eyes, moaned, and my dick stirred.

Once she swallowed, she opened her eyes again. “That’s so, so good. I could probably eat it every day for weeks and never tire of it.”

“It’s one of the dishes I eat every week, part of Antonio’s so-called monotony.”

“Well, I’m on board for that kind of monotony.”

Katie picked up a warm breadstick covered in butter and garlic and took a bite. I merely watched, fascinated at how she took pleasure from the simplest things. Being with Katie was so different from my past relationships in L.A., when status and expensive trinkets had been way more important than anything else.

And as Katie continued to ooh and ahh over everything she ate, allowing me to even feed her the chocolate mousse for dessert, I thought about Jenn’s words. Maybe this Wolfe had, indeed, found his mate.

Soon Katie yawned and cuddled against me as we looked at the stars. Before long, she quieted, snored softly, and went slack in my arms.

I should be disappointed that she’d fallen asleep and we probably wouldn’t be having sex tonight. But as I carried her home, nestled against my chest, disappointment was the last thing I felt.

No, it all just felt…right. Perfect, even.

And as I fell asleep with her pulled close—Katie still in her clothes since she’d been too sleepy to change—I smiled and dreamed of a future where I took my future wife to beach after beach, helping her to collect seashells, until she had shelves near to bursting from them.

Chapter Twenty-One

Katie

Emmy: So, how is Nolan’s mansion?

Me: I don’t care about the house. You should see his beach. I think Nolan needs to have a beach party here this summer.

Amber: I’d love to visit in the summer. Then I could also stop by some famous bakeries for research.

Abby: Really? You could lounge on the beach all day, but instead you want to visit bakeries?

Amber: I have plans. Big ones.

Me: I vote for a girls’ trip to Disneyland.

Emmy: Ooh, yes. But I’d probably bring the twins too. They’ve never been, and I’d like to take them before they become any more teenager-like.
