Don’t think about that now.

“And tell him to make sure it’s remote because I don’t want to deal with crowds of people until we figure things out.”

Abby saluted. “Of course. Let me get on it. You have a passport, right?” I nodded, although I’d never used it. She continued, “Just give me a sec, then.”

Abby typed on her phone, and I itched to see what Nolan replied.

But no, it was for the best to wait and talk in person. The line had blurred between our deal and my heart, and I needed to see if Nolan’s feelings had shifted like mine. If so, then maybe, just maybe, I’d risk facing the world and the internet again.

He could say he doesn’t feel that way about you.

True. But I needed to know, even if his answer ended up crushing my heart.

A heart that wanted Nolan Wolfe but wasn’t sure it could handle Nolan Drake.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Nolan

Abby: She’s agreed to go on a trip with you. But it has to be remote. And I vote for warm.

Me: I already know where I’m taking her.

Abby: Details?

Me: Nope. I’ll pick her up in two days. Tell her to pack for at least four.

Abby: Optimistic, aren’t you?

Me: I can’t fuck this up, Abby. I need to make it work.

Abby: It’s not going to be easy. Maybe you’re used to all the attention and criticism, but Katie’s not. Hell, I wouldn’t be, either.

Me: I know. But that’s a conversation between me and Katie.

Abby: Fine. But brother or not, if you hurt her, I will kick your ass. Maybe break your nose, too, for good measure.

Me: I don’t plan on hurting her.

Me (typed but deleted): I’m falling for her. I want more. So much more.

Me (actual reply instead): I’ll treat her like a queen, I promise.

Abby: I saw the necklace you gave her. That was a good start.

Me: I’ll send the final details later today.

Abby: You’re blowing me off now, huh? Rude.

Me: Love you too.

Two days later, I paced inside the Sonoma County airport, waiting for Abby to drop off Katie. I’d offered to pick her up, but Abby had insisted it would be better for her to drive Katie and let us have the plane ride to talk.

While I’d calmed down a little since the night of the party, just thinking about Wendy Webster and what she’d done to Katie made me curl my fingers into fists. What should’ve been a magical night had turned into a nightmare.

I still didn’t know how I’d deal with Wendy. I had to be careful and do it in a way that highlighted her jealousy and instability without making me look like a complete asshole.

Regardless, that could wait. Seeing Katie, talking with her and convincing her to give us a chance, was my priority.
