“Wait here until I get you.” I felt Nolan leave, but within seconds, my door opened. A hand found mine, and he said, “Let me help you out and then I’ll guide you. It won’t take long, I promise.”

I didn’t hesitate to allow Nolan to assist me. Even if being a real couple was new, I trusted him. He’d never done anything to make me doubt him so far, and I hoped he never did.

With him behind me, his hands on my shoulders, he gave gentle commands, and we walked. It could only have been a few minutes before he stopped. “I’m going to take the blindfold off now.”

His fingers worked, and the material fell away. I blinked a few times against the bright sunlight before everything came into focus, and I gasped.

In front of me was a huge Mayan temple. A kind of step pyramid, with a large rectangular shape at the top. The sun was just starting to set, making the sky a beautiful blend of pink, red, orange, and purple.

“It’s like something from a postcard. What is it?”

He squeezed my shoulders. “We’re at Chichén Itzá, and that’s the Temple of Kukulcán.”

It was only then that I noticed the other stone ruins surrounding the area. An area that was empty except for what looked like staff. “You did this for me?”

He turned my head and kissed me. “For you, I’d do anything, baby.”

Tears stung my eyes. “More and more, I wonder how you’re real.”

He moved to stand in front of me and searched my gaze. “Are you going to cry? Why? Did I do something wrong?”

I placed my hands on his chest and shook my head. “No, of course not. This is quite possibly the most amazing surprise I’ve ever had in my life. Well, maybe it ties with the bookstore shopping spree. But still, I can’t believe you went to all this trouble. For me.”

He cupped my cheek, his gaze intense. My heart thudded as I tried to deal with an onslaught of emotions—happiness, excitement, vulnerability, uncertainty, and something close to love.

Which was impossible. After all, I hadn’t known Nolan very long.

It had to be the gifts. Yes, that was it. Maybe expensive surprises made me think I loved him.

His voice was low as he said, “I would do anything for the chance to see you smile, baby.”

My throat closed up as I took in Nolan’s tender expression. No man had ever looked at me like that before.

As if I were precious. Treasured. Loved.

Then he broke the moment and tickled my side. I squealed and laughed, and Nolan pulled me close to kiss me quiet.

And so we stood there, devouring each other like it was the first time all over again, in front of a Mayan temple at sunset.

More and more, my life started to feel as if it were a book or a movie.

Nolan’s kisses slowed until he finally pulled away and asked, “Did you want to walk around a little and see some more of the site? The place is ours for the hour.”

He put out his hand, and I wrapped mine around his. “Let me guess—Jenn booked this all for you.”

“Yes. And according to her, it wasn’t easy.”

“She deserves a raise, for sure.”

“Hey, I already pay her a small fortune. But maybe she and her wife deserve a vacation too, all expenses paid.”

“Whatever it takes, don’t lose that woman. She’s a miracle worker.”

“I’m glad you like her. I’ve never had a happy girlfriend and a happy assistant before.”

Even if it was a little childish, I stood a little taller knowing that Jenn liked me better than the others before me.

How many had there been?
