“Ahhh. Prettier than your owner. What will the two of you do for me?”

From the choking sounds she was making I really should get back to her. A brain-dead half-Cucitrice was of no use.

“See how she dies, see how she dies.Mmmm. Come to papa.” I reached for the knife. The instant my fingers touched the hilt, heat flashed into my hand, cooking my skin, threatening to light up my arm.

I stumbled back, thoughts scrambling. The knife tumbled to the ground, bounced...

Val ripped at me.

GOT YOU, FUCKER. WALK.

Catastrophic nerve impulses ran hither and thither, burning up neurons as I walked crookedly away from the car. My ankles turned sideways, thumping down. Arms flailed, my tongue refused to go back into my mouth.

Go away. Go away. Drown in shit, Val!

FUCK NO.

Sirens split the morning air. Birds scattered before me.

I tore back control, cast Val into a dark corner of my mind, and spun. She was too far away. The oncoming vehicles sounded too close.

“Very well. We go hence! I was about to save her from strangulation but...”

A narrow alley between buildings would conceal me. I jogged into it.

Now. Whatever did the future hold? A burger and shake or world domination?

Eat first, I decided. Then I glanced down at my front and spied the blood.

Shower first. Had to find clothes too.

“Lavender’s blue, dilly-dilly, lavender’s green,

When I am king, dilly-dilly, Zara can scream.”

I’d get the knife later, and her. Nothing would stop me.

I whistled the tune and kicked a few rocks.

CHAPTER42

Zara

I barely held onto living.Choking on spit and bandage, I revived to the sound of my heart racing and the feel of the chain fence dragging at my face. My throat hurt, strangled by something.

Raggedly, I climbed a little to my feet, on legs that seemed impossibly weak. Plucking with numb fingers finally freed my neck.

I collapsed to the ground. The gravel spun in circles. Throwing up was imminent, but I only had the energy to heave.

Val?

I looked up. The sun was so bright.

No. Not Val. The Nightmare King.

Squinting, I found no one near me.

My car.Hiscar. He’d left it behind.
