I crawled on bare knees and hands, cutting myself but I crawled. On the way I found something soft under my palm and I paused, wiping away tears and sweat from my eyes.

It was Val’s teddy bear.

Just when I thought there was nothing more left to feel, a pain so bright and searing ripped through my chest. Everything was ruined, destroyed.

Was Val completely gone? Was the King all that was left? Judging by what he’d done to me, the answer was yes.

Then I spotted the glint of the metal ball a yard away, perched within a pool of clotted blood. Naked and shivering, finding it difficult to focus, I wrapped my arms about myself.
