Before Jake can pick up the phone, she grabs it.
“You’re going to regret this, Rory,” Jake says through painful gasps.
“Am I?” she asks in a light voice and starts laughing.
The sound sends a chill down my spine. She’s finally able to avenge herself and she’s making sure Jake feels the same pain and fear she experienced.
“Help!” Jake shouts. “Help me!”
Rory kicks his face, shutting him up immediately. “I told you to be quiet,” she says in a calm voice.
Jake sobs, cowering away from her.
“You never listen to anything I say,” Rory says in an exasperated voice as she goes near him. Bending down, she removes the scarf at her throat and starts wrapping it over Jake’s mouth, effectively cutting off his loud sobs and gasps.
“Seth,” Rory’s voice sounds in my ear. “Are you still there?”
“Yeah,” I respond immediately. “We’re all here.”
“Did I mess everything up?” she asks in a quiet, subdued voice.
“No,” I say, glancing at my teammates. They stare back at me with the same admiration as I feel for Rory. “You’ve done amazingly well, Rory.”
“So, messing with Jake isn’t going to compromise the mission?”
“Nah, you just ensured the operation will succeed.”
“Really?” Her voice is hesitant.
“It’ll take several hours for us to download everything on those servers,” I explain. “We were afraid Jake’s interference would ruin our plan but you seem to have taken care of the problem. Without him, we’ll be able to capture everything Senator Vaughn wants to hide.”
“Seth...”
“Yeah?”
“Do I let him die?”
I stare at the laptop screen as Jake thrashes on the floor. Now that my initial shock has waned, I can fully taste the satisfaction of seeing the asshole squirm under Rory’s feet.
“He’ll be more useful to us alive,” I say.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Just stay put. I’ll get there immediately and carry him out of the house. We’ll take him back to our command center and deal with him there. I’m sure he’ll have plenty of information for us.”
“Hold up. Won’t the Black Widow spies see you coming in?”
I pause, knowing she’s right.
“Maybe I’ll wait until it gets dark and then, try getting inside the house without being noticed.”
“That’ll take too long. The asshole can bleed out and die on me. Here’s what we should do. Send someone else from your team. Someone who’s not as recognizable as you, Simon, or Oliver. Tell him to enter the property by scaling the hedges in Mrs. Hall’s backyard. I know all the neighbors from the surrounding houses, so there’s no risk of being spotted by spies if he enters through the backyard.”
Surprise flares through me. When did Rory become such a strategist? Within seconds, she’s thought of a way to get Jake out of the house in the most secure way.
“Seth, are you listening to me?” she asks.
“Yes, I’m right here.”
