Brooke nodded, steeling herself for the pain. “Let’s do this.”

“We’ll do it together. On three. One, two, three, go!”

They both bit into their wings. It wasn’t as bad as Brooke had been expecting. Not at first, anyway. Then it started to get hotter. A lot hotter.

“Okay,” Dylan said, nodding as he licked his lips. “All right. There it is.”

“Yep. Here it comes,” Brooke agreed, wincing as she swallowed. The heat had begun to radiate from her mouth to her whole face, and the pain was creeping up into her sinuses. El Chupacabra didn’t disappoint.

“I can feel it.” Dylan waved his hand in front of his mouth. “Oh man. That’s…wow.”

“Ugh, I’m snotting!” Brooke reached for a napkin and blew her nose.

Dylan clutched his stomach, laughing and crying at once. “Oh god, it’s going into my brain.”

His laughter set Brooke off and she let out a painful snort. They always did this to each other—set each other off, ramped each other up, fed off each other’s energy.

Brooke held her hand out in front of her. “I’m literally shaking.”

“I can’t stop crying,” Dylan wheezed as his whole body shook with laughter.

“Here, take a napkin.” She handed him a fresh one from the table. “Don’t touch your eyes,” she warned him as he blotted his face.

“I think it’s too late.” Both his eyes were red and streaming. “Either that or I’m going blind from the pain.” He took off his glasses and wiped his eyes with the backs of his hands.

“Why do we do this to ourselves?” She hadn’t laughed this hard in ages, and it felt cathartic. She needed Dylan around all the time to make sure she belly-laughed regularly.

“Because it’s fun. Obviously.”

The absurdity set her off again and she doubled over with a fresh bout of laughter, gasping for breath.

Dylan draped his arm around her shoulders. “You okay? You gonna live?” She nodded, and he pulled her against him. “Hang in there.”

Brooke curled into him, still laughing and crying, but also enjoying the feeling of being cradled against his chest. “Yep. I’m good. I’ve got this.”

“That’s my girl.”

Even through the pain haze, she felt a thrill at being called his girl.

Too much of a thrill.

She pushed off him and sat up. “I’m feeling better. Are you feeling better?”

He nodded, still dabbing at his nose with a napkin. “I think it’s receding. I might live. I think my taste buds are goners though. They’re never coming back from this.”

He shouldn’t be so attractive with his face bright red and sweaty and his nose running, dammit. Seeing him like this should be the ultimate boner killer, but somehow it just made her want him even more.

She scooted away from him and reached for a fresh napkin from the stack. “Have another napkin.”

“Thanks.” He used it to wipe his eyes, and reached for his beer.

“No, don’t drink beer!” she warned him too late.

He winced in pain. “Ow. Fuck. That was a mistake.”

She took the beer away from him and gave him a shove with her shoulder. “You should know better.” They were both laughing again.

“I do know better. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
