“Yes, what a shame that would be.”

Olivia hands me a plate of eggs, spinach, and avocado toast, and I return the favor by pouring her coffee. I have the timing of her almond milk down to a science at this point. The pair of us have gotten comfortable over the past two weeks of playing house. I don’t know how she feels, but I love it. I can’t get enough. I don’t want it to end. Even if I don’t make tenure, even if her father fires me, as long as I’m with Olivia, I don’t care.

“What are you thinking about?” She wraps her arms around me and the tension melts away.

I swallow the anxiety. “I don’t want this to end.”

Her eyes widen. “Why would this have to end?”

“I mean, playing house here away from everyone and everything.”

“Hey, I don’t plan on changing anything after we get back. I want to stay in my apartment, but I plan on sleeping over frequently as long as breakfast in bed is still on the table. Hopefully, some additional perks, too.”

“Always. So, it’s too cold to do any hiking. What else do you want to do?”

“You.”

“You’re insatiable, you know that?”

“And you’re not?”

“We know we both are.”

Olivia scours the room, opening cabinets until she triumphantly returns with a deck of cards. My phone rings on the table. She stops. “It’s my dad.”

“Answer it.”

“Hey, Dad, I’m about to put you on speaker.”

“Good news. Nathan was apprehended.”

Olivia sighs in relief. “Where was he?”

“The woods behind your apartment.”

“Any word from Matt and Mia?”

“They’re safe. I do think you should either stay with Tomas or come home.”

Was I dreaming? He was giving her permission to stay with me?

“Thanks, Dad. I’ll talk to Tomas. We’re going to stay tonight and come home tomorrow if that’s okay.”

“Sure, kiddo. Be safe.”

I’m relieved that we get an extra day and that she’s safe, but a little sad that this was so short-lived. I could lock her up here and fuck her senseless day and night. Playing house without responsibilities seems much more fun. Plus, I’m sure that things will be chaotic with the trial coming up and the vote for tenure still on the agenda.

“Let’s soak.” She strips what little clothes she had on, then grabs her coffee cup, and heads out the back French doors. I lick my lips, suddenly parched, and follow her. I melt into the hot water next to her and all feels right in the world.

“Maybe it’ll snow and we won’t have to go.”

She grins. “That actually would be nice. We have enough food, and I’m sure enough body heat.”

“Are you having a fun trip?” She nods.

“I am. The circumstances were stressful, but I’m happy we got away together.”

“If you liked this vibe, we could come back for your twentieth birthday in a few weeks. Maybe Mia, Matt, and Alexandria could come, too.”
