“Ahh, there he is,” Jonathan says with his hand outstretched.
“Mr. Bryne. Always a pleasure.” Bile rises in my throat. I should have expected this considering he voted yes towards my tenure.
“You seem to be settling in nicely.” He gestures towards the lab.
I nod. “Yes, I just got it situated this week, but it should work nicely.” An awkward beat of silence passes. “Is there something I can help you with, Mr. Bryne?”
“Please, call me Jonathan.” His attention lingers outside of the door.
“Okay, sure. Again, is there something I can help you with?”
“No, no. I just wanted to introduce you to one of your new research assistants.”
The woman walks in with lust and venom dancing in her eyes. Her long blonde hair is perfectly straight, stilettos high, and eyes rimmed with kohl. My blood runs cold.
“Tomas, this is my daughter, Vanessa Richardson-Bryne. I have no doubt she’ll be perfect for your lab.”
“Hello Professor DeLuca, so lovely to see you again.”
