“I told you to cancel everything you saw fit. If you still want to go on the vacation—take it. Enjoy some time away from work. I don’t mind if you want to use it. Or you can see if we can still get a refund.”

“And all the people who were supposed to attend? What about them?”

“Hopefully they can get refunds as well.” I shrug, and his eyes widen at the motion.

“I can’t believe you’re so casual about all of this. People spent a lot of money to come to our wedding. My parents are devastated. My aunt and uncle are furious because they can’t get a refund. My cousin wants her bridal shower gift back.”

“I’m happy to write an apology letter we can mail to everyone. All the gifts will be returned. I just need time right now. But I promise we will do what we can to make it up to everyone.”

“And what about me? How are you going to make it up to me?”

“I don’t think I can, and I’m sorry for that.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

“Both.”

David’s eyes go to the ground, and he shakes his head.

“Any particular reason you came here instead of somewhere else?” His brow furrows, and he looks off into the distance.

“What do you mean?”

“I think you know what I’m asking.”

“You know Gabe’s one of my best friends.”

“And a pro football player with money and abs. Who looks at you like…” He shakes his head. “You don’t have to say it. I should have known really. The fact that you didn’t make it to the altar before. The way he looked when you asked him to be your man of honor. I just need to know how long things have been going on between you two. Why you dragged me into it if it was always going to be him anyway.”

It feels like a kick in the gut. I skip the part where I confess that I’m in love with Gabe. David doesn’t need to hear all that. He wasn’t awful to me. He was generally a good guy. I just can’t be with him when I’m in love with someone else.

“I was in love with you, David. I wanted to marry you. I thought we were going to spend our lives together.”

“And then you just woke up one morning and didn’t?”

“And then when it came time to fly to the wedding, I flew here instead. I didn’t even think about it. It wasn’t premeditated. There was no secret I was keeping from you. I just got to the airport, and when I saw Seattle up on the board… I realized I wanted to be here instead of at the wedding.”

“That’s all it took to end a two-year relationship? A sign on a board?” David gives me an incredulous look.

“It wasn’t the sign. It was the feeling it gave me.”

“So how long have you been in love with him for then?”

“I wasn’t.”

“But you are now?”

“I think I might be.”

“One sign and a few days, and you’re out of love with me and in love with someone else.” David’s eyes well with tears, and I feel like the worst human on the planet.

“Better now than after we were already married, isn’t it? You can find someone else. Someone better than me. You deserve better than me. And you have to admit, David, things weren’t the best… You didn’t even seem like you wanted me half the time. Not like you should want someone you’re about to marry. You were phoning a lot of things in there at the end. Going through the motions. Not because you wanted to.”

“I had second thoughts sometimes. Yes. Isn’t that normal?”

“Maybe? But maybe not? Maybe we were both just realizing it wasn’t right. We weren’t right.”

“Yeah well… I didn’t have some gorgeous supermodel best friend to run off to. I just have an empty apartment and people asking me a lot of questions.”
