“Well, I mean, if Ihadasked her, she probably would have said yes,” Ledger points out.

Keeping his face impassive, Coach raises his eyebrows. “You think so?”

Ledger looks up at his brother for a few moments. Then ducks his eyes and mutters, “No, Coach.”

Conrad nods satisfyingly before turning to me.

I sit up even straighter in my seat.

Not only because he has that aura but also because growing up, coaches were the only people who ever gave a shit about me. So I owe everything that I’ve achieved to them.

“I can’t give you advice either,” he states firmly. “But all I’ll say is that if you love her, you should tell her. You should also tell her that you’re not perfect because you aren’t. But you’ll try to be. For her. Because the girl you love, whoever she is, deserves that from you. She deserves a perfect version of you, whatever that may look like. So you tell her that. And then you try your fucking hardest to make good on your promise. Along with giving her everything that she wants. Everything that she tells you she wants and everything that she doesn’t. Because it’s your job to figure it out and you better do it well. It’s the least you could do for her after she picks you out of all the guys that she could’ve gone for. Do you understand?”

I notice Ledger, Reed and Reign nodding.

“It’s the most important job you could ever have,” Reign informs me.

“Hardest and sweetest too,” Reed contributes.

“But worth every bit of it,” Ledger finishes.

Coach nods again and turns to leave. But I call out, “Coach, why’d you pick this place?”

He throws us a small smile. “Because my girl loves to dance and she wanted a night out with her friends. And it was time I attended a team building session. So I put two things together.” Then, muttering to himself, “The only way I could’ve been able to attend these unnecessary things.”

With that he leaves and they all chuckle.

There’s a rumor about Coach Thorne too. He may be a hardass for everyone but they say he’s soft like butter for his girl. Who also happens to be dancing with the same group of girls. And while these guys find it amusing, I don’t.

It makes me want to get out of here even more. Away from all the love that’s apparently in the air.

So that’s what I do.

I get away.

CHAPTEREIGHT

Riot

When I get back home, I’m angry as a bear.

Because even though I took the time to drive around in order to cool down after the whole love fest, I’m anything but cool. And then when I walk in through the door, I find my sister Cami standing by the couch, glaring at me.

I close the door behind me with a soft click even though I want to slam it shut; Sophie must be in bed by now and I don’t want to wake her.

My voice is quiet too even though I want to lash out at her. “What the hell are you doing here?”

Cami usually shows up when she wants to deliver a lecture. When she thinks I’m not living my life like I should. Or rather, I’m not living my life according to howshethinks I should. My other sister Lucia, though, is more soft-spoken. She believes in live and let live.

While I love both my sisters equally, I’d much rather confront Lucia right now than Cami. I’m not in the mood for another one of her lectures and another one of our heated discussions. And judging by Cami’s unhappy expression right now, it’s going to be a good one.

Or a bad one.

Whatever.

“Waiting for you,” she replies, folding her arms across her chest.

“You —”
