A shocking thought suddenly came to him.

What if Lexi wasn’t the target, but Mandy?

It made sense, after all. She was the famous movie star, the one in the public limelight. He had become so infatuated with Lexi that it seemed obvious to him that she was the one at threat. But suddenly, he wasn’t so sure.

What if it was all a ploy to detract from the real target?

Stan appeared a few feet away, having received the same alert on his phone. He spoke to him through the earpiece. “You want me to check it out?”

Kane looked across at the steps to the stage where Lexi was climbing up. She was in full view and he felt safe in knowing that nothing was likely to happen to her out here in front of all the guests.

“No. I’ll go. You stay with Lexi. Don’t let her out of your sight.”

“I won’t,” Stan promised.

Turning away from Lexi, he disappeared into the crowd and made his way toward the site of the alarm.

When he arrived at the Rockefellers’ suite, he saw immediately that something was wrong.

The door was ajar even though his team had made sure to keep all of them shut. He could hear a rustling inside, though it was some distance from the door.

“Stay back. Quiet,” he whispered to Bud, not wanting his dog to go charging blindly in there.

Bud didn’t make a sound, though his expression made it clear that he’d understood. He stayed close to Kane, but let him take the lead.

Kane opened the door as gently as he could. It swung open with barely a sound. The first thing he noticed were the bedside drawers that had been pulled open and rifled through.

The sheets on the bed had been thrown hastily onto it, as if someone had been searching beneath it for something. The windows were secure, there was no sign of whoever it was.

Several clicks sounded from the walk-in closet, then the sound of someone stubbing a toe and cursing.

Bud strained beside him, wanting to go on ahead but obeying his command to hang back. Sliding his gun from his shoulder holster, Kane pointed it in front of him.

“This is security. I know you’re in there. I have a gun aimed right at you so if you don’t want to be shot, put your hands up, come out and let me see you.”

There was silence in the closet as the person hesitated. He could almost hear their mind ticking over, wondering what they should do.

“I’m not going to ask again. If you make me go in there, you’ll have to take on me and my dog.”

At the mention of the word “dog”, Bud started to bark ferociously.

Suddenly a woman stumbled out. Dolled up to the nines, some would think her beautiful though she had the kind of plastic and overtly sexual look that Kane abhorred.

Instead of the bag of jewels he was expecting her to have stolen in her hands, she held only her phone.

“Don’t shoot, please! I’m not a thief.”

She sounded very demanding for a woman under house arrest. She laughed suddenly, a laugh as fake as the rest of her.

“I was only trying to take some pictures of their room. They never invite people into their home after all.”

“Don’t you think they have a reason for that?” He wasn’t surprised by her lack of apology. She didn’t seem to think she’d done anything wrong.

“But my fans are so curious and I didn’t want to disappoint them.”

Fans? The woman must be someone, though who, he had no idea.

“I’m Coco,” she introduced herself, seeming shocked that he didn’t know. “I have like, twenty million subscribers on Instagram.”
