“Let’s hope they’ll enjoy the sight of you in handcuffs,” Kane retorted thinking only of arresting her. Of course, she took that to mean something entirely different from what he’d intended.

“Is that what you like?” She purred, batting her lashes at him. “I guess I’m game so long as you don’t tell my husband. He tends to get angry at these things.”

Kane didn’t bother to hide his disgust.

Escorting her out of the room, he led her to the security office where his men could have the pleasure of dealing with her.

Lexi introduced the singer to a cheer of approval from the audience.

This was a big win, to have Stella Speed performing a private concert, but Lexi couldn’t hear a word of the chart-topping song she was singing.

As soon as the curtain had risen, she’d dropped her mike and went in search of Kane, though that was no easy feat. While he was practically anonymous, she couldn’t move a step without someone stopping her to wish her a happy birthday — in all the excitement leading up to today, she’d actually forgotten that it was indeed, her birthday. She’d had to suffer through their well-wishes, excusing herself as she hurried after him.

But the man had simply vanished.

She was acutely aware of the absence he had caused and was startled by how much that affected her. She wasn’t the clingy type, had never considered herself so. This was a whole new sensation for her and one she wasn’t particularly enjoying.

She tried him in the security office — the first place she went to — but his men hadn’t seen him. She stopped by the kitchen, hoping that maybe he’d been tempted by the food on display only for Ruth to reveal that she hadn’t seen him for a while now, but didn’t he look wonderful in a tuxedo?

Stella’s powerful voice soared over the grounds via the network of speakers her stage team had carefully erected. Even here, inside the private wing of their house, her talent could be enjoyed.

Lexi had made sure that everyone — even the staff who worked in the house — could enjoy the festivities tonight.

What a shame, then, that it gave her not one iota of joy.

A wave of exhaustion came over her suddenly, brought on by the lack of sleep last night. Her shoes were pinching and she wanted them off her feet. Slipping out of her heels, she carried them in one hand, her clutch in the other. She was entering her wing of the house when a voice stopped her.

“Miss. Lexi, I’m afraid this part of the house is meant to be off limits right now.”

It was Stan Kane’s right-hand man.

“I know, but I just need a few minutes alone.”

His eyes crinkled with apology. “I’m not sure I can allow that.”

“I know, you’ve got orders to have eyes on me all times, correct?”

He nodded, but didn’t say anything else.

“This entire wing is has been sectioned off, so no one could have gotten here. I will literally be only a few feet from you.”

“I understand,” Stan began, “but—”

Horrifically, Lexi’s eyes started glistening with tears. “Please. I just need a few minutes.”

The tears were his undoing. With three twenty-something daughters of his own, Stan could never say no to a crying woman.

“Alright. But I will be right here.” He gestured at the wing’s entrance.

“Thank you.”

She hurried past him, escaping into her bedroom, shutting the door behind her where she let out a relieved sigh.

It was only when she’d gotten halfway across the room that she noticed a figure by the chest of drawers. His face and figure were hidden in the half light, but she could tell it was a man. Her heart did a relieved flip flop.

Of course he’d be here.
