“I assure you, Hank, that in my world, rarely is law enforcement called in. I’m judge and jury. I’ll be the one handling the punishment and I assure you that you won’t like what you receive. Do I make myself clear?”

At least the light in his eyes appeared as if I’d put the fear of God into him. Only after he nodded profusely did I let go, backing away. After this, I needed to take another shower.

“As of right now, you’re fired, Hank.” I backed away, giving him a little space.

He collected himself more quickly than I would have believed.

“You don’t seem to understand that you’re in no position to hire anyone else at this point.”

“And you don’t seem to understand that you really don’t want to fuck with me.” When he said nothing else, I headed for the door.

“I would seriously hate to see something happen to you while you’re here, Sebastian. That’s not what your grandfather would have wanted.”

I laughed before opening the door. “And it would seem you’ve underestimated me, Hank. I would have thought by now you would have checked my background as well as my reputation. I suggest you do so. That will certainly help you understand who you’re dealing with. Threats only excite me.”

“And it would be in your best interest to get to know the people of this town as well. That will help guide you. Please let me now when you’ve changed your mind regarding selling. Of course I’m not certain I’ll be able to obtain the same price that Ben and Michael were prepared to pay, but I’m certain it will be at least worthwhile.”

I laughed then left his office, not bothering to close the door behind me.

The asshole had fucked with the wrong man.

CHAPTER 11

Jessica

“Talk to me,” Megan said after we’d chit-chatted about town gossip and what was going on in her world.

“We have been talking,” I told her as I pushed my plate away.

“Nope. You’ve been listening to me for twenty minutes without saying more than three words.”

“That’s not true! I laughed a few times.” I wanted so much to take my mind off the phone call from earlier, but I could still remember how gleeful James’ expressions were when he’d lorded something over me.

“Nope. I’m not buying it. What’s going on?”

“You mean other than being told I probably need to find a new place to live?”

“You’re kidding me? Who told you that?”

“Walter’s attorney. He was gleeful about telling me too. I don’t know where to go.”

“Hmmm… Don’t you have a lease?”

“It was slightly more than an email and I can’t find it.”

“Ugh. Then you might have no other choice. I know of a couple places.”

“As long as it doesn’t cost more than five hundred dollars a month then maybe I can swing it.”

Megan sighed. “You need to get a better job, one that pays you what you’re owed.”

“With what skills? I went to community college for a semester and a half after working for four years out of high school to try and earn any money to keep a roof over my head. Then I met Mr. Asshole and thought I’d found Prince Charming. After leaving the jerk, I was an administrative assistant. They are a dime a dozen, it seems.”

“I know but you are one smart lady. Stop selling yourself short.” She took a sip of her drink, the quiet between us something I hated, although I adored her for trying to solve the problems of the world. “When will you know if you need to move?”

“Well, as luck would have it, I have a meeting this afternoon with the grandson who popped into town to handle Walter’s estate.”

“A grandson?”
