Page 4 of My Demon Roommates

"Who are you trying to seduce now?" Star piped in, making me jump.

"Shit! Where did you come from?" I demanded, whirling on him. So much for my great hearing.

"Uh, from my room?" he asked, sleepily rubbing his eyes, and I shook my head.

"I'm not trying to seduce anyone," I grumbled, scowling at them both.

"Uh-huh," Star agreed in a tone that implied he didn't. At all.

"I mean it. I just wanted to check if Dakota's into guys," I explained.

"And? Is he?" Star asked, much to Nico's disappointment, judging by his frown. Had he thought Star was on his side in this?

"Very much so," I declared with gusto, and Star smirked.

"Huh. Maybe I can talk to him after all. Flirting's gotta be the same here as in the demon realm, right?" Star asked, and I shrugged, because why not? Sex was sex, no matter where you did it. I imagined flirting was the same.

"Whatever you do, just make sure you act human," Nico stressed, and I patted his shoulder.

"Don't worry, Nico. We'll be good, I promise. Also, don't act like you aren't interested in him too," I added, and he suddenly became extremely focused on searching for the dishes.

"He acts like we haven't noticed all the times he's conspicuously checked Dakota out," Star mock-whispered, and I chuckled.

Nico, Star, and I had been friends for centuries at this point. There was nothing we didn't know about each other. We could tell when the other was happy or sad or lying, and we were there for each other no matter what.

It was how we'd known the moment Nico suggested this house that there was something special about it. For Nico to insist we share a house with a human, there had to be some reason for it, after all.

Turned out the human was the reason. I'd never been interested in humans before. To me, they'd always felt like a different species I couldn't connect with except through my paintings. But Dakota was different. He made me curious. I wanted to know more about him, and yes, I wanted to fuck him too. Or be fucked by him. Judging by the rest of him, he was packing some great goods, and I would love to give him a ride.

For some reason, though, I didn't want to rush into things. Even with Star and Nico, I'd always been a one-night type of guy—or rather, many one-nights scattered through the centuries—but for once, I wanted to take my time. And I wanted to do it with Nico and Star.

I didn't understand what these new feelings were, but I wanted to explore them. Convincing the other two—especially Nico—might require some effort, but I still wanted to try.

There was something special about Dakota, and I wanted to find out what. Maybe our demon friend Azazel wasn't the only one who could snag a human for a lover. It couldn't hurt to give it a shot, right? We were already awkward in terms of roommates, so even if he rejected me, things wouldn't change all that much. Though Nico might kill me if I messed things up.

Slow and steady. I needed to take things slow and steady.

Star

The day we’d moved into this house, Nico had prepared dinner for us. It was the first time he'd cooked, but all the time he spent lurking in the human realm had helped him make a tasty-enough meal with no previous experience, though I'd discovered I wasn't really a fan of mashed potatoes.

That day, he'd invited Dakota to eat with us to thank him for renting the rooms to us, and somehow that had turned into all of us eating dinner together each night. Nico cooked most nights, but on the weekends, Dakota did it instead. I wouldn't admit it to anyone—especially Nico—but I liked Dakota's food better.

"Oh wow, this is delicious," Ryk said, breaking the silence. "Nico, you've gotten really good at making human food in such a short time!"

There was a moment of silence, and I blinked when I realized what was wrong. Ryk had just fucked up.

"Human food?" Dakota asked, tilting his head in confusion. He had long, silky brown hair that he tied up in a bun when he went to work, but he'd left his hair free right now, and the strands fell into his eyes when he moved. Ryk was right about one thing. Dakota was an extremely sexy human.

"Uh..." Ryk mumbled, searching for the right words and appearing increasingly panicked.

"I had a brief phase where I made all kinds of specialty pet food," Nico explained smoothly, giving Dakota a sheepish smile. "I didn't know how to cook normal, human food back then, but I started learning recently."

"Ah, that makes more sense," Dakota said with a faint twitch of his lips, and I sighed in relief before shooting Ryk a glare.

"What did you think he meant?" The words popped out of my mouth before I knew it, and three sets of eyes turned on me.

Nico had his usual 'what the hell' look on his face, while Ryk seemed to beg me not to drag out the topic. Dakota, meanwhile, simply looked surprised that I'd actually spoken to him.
