"Obviously. I liked it too much," he grumbled, making me chuckle.

"Guys, I'm heading out. See you when I get back," Dakota said in a normal-ish voice, and our eyes widened at the same time.

"Shit!" I said as I scrambled off Star, then off the bed.

And because we were some of the smartest demons in existence, we forgot to use our magic and instead raced down the stairs in an attempt to catch Dakota before he left.

"Oh, hey, guys," Dakota said as he waved at us from the kitchen doorway. "Sorry, I wanted to have breakfast with you," he said sheepishly, and I couldn't hold back a grin.

While I could be annoyed that he'd lied to get us here, I didn't. Because he'd lied so he could have breakfast with us, and how could I be mad at something like that?

"Sorry we took so long," Star said, and Dakota waved him off.

"Don't worry. I'm sorry for interrupting you two too. You sounded like you were having fun," he teased, and I tilted my head at him.

"How did you even hear us? Isn't human hearing abysmal?"

"Ryk!" Nico chastised, but Dakota merely laughed.

"Nah, he's right. Compared to your hearing, it is. Nico actually let me hear like you guys do for a bit. Magic is really fucking cool," he said in an awed voice, and I grinned.

"It is, isn't it?" I asked, and then jumped when Star suddenly shot to his feet.

"What is it?" Nico asked, instantly on guard, and Star raised a finger before rushing out of the room. What the hell happened?

Nico

"Wait here," I told Ryk, shooting a glance at Dakota so he knew why I was telling him to wait. Then, I raced after Star up the stairs until I reached the roof. The door was already open, and I stepped outside, a soft "Oh!" escaping me. I could tell instantly what had caught Star's attention, though the fact that he'd sensed it from inside the kitchen showed exactly how much more powerful than us he was.

"Dark souls," Star said, confirming what I'd sensed.

"Can you tell where they are?"

"A general direction. I'd be able to tell more if I shifted, but finding a safe place to shift would waste too much time. We can still locate them," he said, and I hummed thoughtfully.

"We should go downstairs and send Dakota off first. Then the three of us can go out and look," I said, and Star nodded in agreement.

Finding and capturing the dark souls that escaped from Otherworld was our main mission, and the reason we'd been stationed here in the human realm. The fact that a demon had been the one to help them escape—though we still didn't know if Mammon had willingly allowed himself to be summoned, or if he was doing it against his will—had us all even more motivated to capture them all and resolve the issue before they were able to harm the humans.

Things had been quiet since we moved here, and I had to admit I'd started letting my guard down. The appearance of a dark soul was a wake-up call that we needed to be more vigilant. If anything happened to Dakota because of his involvement with us, I'd never be able to forgive myself.

"Everything okay?" Dakota asked, and I smiled at him.

"Yeah, everything's fine," I assured him, and he pursed his lips.

"Nico, I understand there are things I can't help you with, and I'll stay out of your way, I promise you. But I still deserve some honesty, don't you think?" Dakota asked, and I ducked my head. He was right, wasn't he? Playing this off as something that wasn't serious could be a mistake.

"You're right," Star said, sharing a glance with me. "You deserve to know, especially if we might be leading danger your way."

"Remember the dark souls we talked about before?" I asked, and Dakota nodded. "Star sensed one of them, so we need to check it out and capture the soul before they escape."

"Oh. Will it be dangerous?"

"I didn't sense Mammon, so it shouldn't be. The souls themselves have very less strength, and no magic at all. They're also unable to affect the human realm on their own, so since Mammon isn't with them, it should be an easy job," Star said, his tone reassuring in a way I'd never heard it before.

It was frankly fascinating to see how differently we all behaved with each other. Our dynamic was different with each person in this relationship, and that gave us an opportunity to see different sides of the men we loved we wouldn't have gotten to see otherwise.

I blinked as my thoughts jerked to a halt. Had I just thought the men we loved? Loved? When in the ever-loving Chasm had my feelings for these three deepened that much?
