Shaking my head, I focused back on Star and Dakota's conversation. There would be time later to deal with my feelings. Right now, I needed to focus on keeping my men safe and capturing the dark soul.
"So I should just go to work?" Dakota asked, and Ryk was the one who answered.
"Yeah. It's an easy job for the three of us, but if you were with us, we'd have to split up so we could keep you safe," Ryk explained, and Dakota nodded. He was mature enough to understand this wasn't a slight against him, but at the same time, I could guess he was disappointed he couldn't be with us.
An idea struck, and I pulled the earbuds I'd used to let him hear like us out of my pockets and changed the magic I'd put on them. "Star, Ryk, could you touch these please?" I asked, and they both gave me mirroring looks of confusion but did as I asked without a question. Had we always trusted each other that much?
Turning, I held the earbuds out to Dakota. "Here. I know you'll be anxious about not being with us, and while this isn't the same, I think it might help."
"What does it do now?" Dakota asked as he carefully took them from me.
"The earbuds will allow you to hear what we hear. Just in case we separate, you can switch between the three of us by tapping the buds," I explained, and his brows shot up.
"Will I be able to talk to you?" he asked, and I shook my head.
"Not at the moment, no. I'd need to make similar buds for all of us," I explained, and he shook his head.
"Don't do that. You should keep up your strength and magic. You might need it. This is enough for now," Dakota said with a reassuring smile.
Before he left, Dakota pulled each one of us in a tight hug. His arms were like bands of steel around me, and I soaked in his strength as if it could give me more power. While Dakota had no magic, he was by no means weak. If there wasn't the tiniest bit of risk of the dark soul trying to possess him, I might've even asked him to come along, but I couldn't endanger him like that.
Pulling back, Dakota gave me a kiss, his lips warm and firm against mine. "Be careful, all right?" he murmured against my lips, and I nodded.
Stepping back, he hugged and kissed Ryk, then Star, telling them both to be careful as well.
"Text me as soon as you're back home safe," Dakota said, and Ryk gave him a salute.
"Yes, sir!"
Rolling his eyes at Ryk, Dakota grabbed his car keys, and left, closing the front door behind him. His car started a few moments later, and then he drove off.
"We should get going too. We can't let them slip away," Star said, and I nodded.
"I'll let Consort Reece and the others know," I said, and Star nodded before snapping his fingers and changing all our clothes into something we could wear outside.
Ryk apparently didn't like what Star picked for him because he changed his clothes again while I texted Reece.
Reece: Let me know if you need backup. Be careful and don't take any unnecessary risks.
Me: We will.
Reece: Where's your mate?
Me: At work.
Reece: Send me the address and I'll have someone look after him from a distance.
"Reece says he'll send someone to watch over Dakota," I told the others, then sent Reece Dakota's work address, along with a thank you. Now, all we needed to do was capture the dark soul, and then I could think about what exactly I felt for my mates.

"If the dark souls are finally in the city, they might be looking for people to possess," I said as I closed my eyes and focused on the faint aura I could sense at the edges of my consciousness. "There," I said, pointing the direction I'd sensed the soul in.
"Isn't the hospital that way?" Nico asked, and we exchanged worried glances. While dark souls couldn't usually possess a body that wasn't theirs, they would be able to do it with the help of a demon. I couldn't sense Mammon, but I had a feeling he was staying just outside my range. After all, we could both sense each other's presence.
"Come on, let's go," I said, holding my hands out. When using our magic to travel, we had to stay in physical contact so we didn't end up in different places.
