I don’t miss the look of concern on his face. “Are you okay? Are you sick?”

“There is no easy way to say this, but I met Luna six months ago at a club in Chicago.” I can feel the anger start to rise in my brother. “We went home together.” Swallowing the lump in my throat, I say the words that I rehearsed in my head, all night. “Pete, the baby is mine.”

He doesn’t say anything, just stares at me, unblinking. I swear I can hear him clench his jaw.

“Breakfast is ready.” Sara calls from the open doorway. She comes over to us. “What’s going on?” Looking between the two of us she raises a brow.

“Tell her.” Pete says quietly.

Sara looks at me. “Tell me what?”

“Ahem… Luna and I met six months ago in Chicago. I’m the baby’s father.” I met with silence, again.

She looks at me closely and surprises the shit out of me. “I knew it.”

“What do you mean, you knew it?” Pete looks at his wife. “If you knew why the fuck didn’t you tell me.”

“First of all, do not talk to me like that.” Sara snaps at him. “Secondly, I didn’t know for sure, so why would I tell you if I wasn’t a hundred percent certain.”

My brother pulls Sara down onto his lap. “You’re right baby. I’m sorry.”

I turn away from them while they have their little moment. She stands up and heads back inside, but before Pete can say anything I’m saved because Nicky comes running out. He climbs onto his dad’s lap, getting some snuggles.

“Good morning, Nicky.” I say quietly.

The boy smiles at me. “Mornin’ Uncle Bas.”

Fuck, he’s cute. I take a sip of my coffee.

“Come and eat.” Sara calls out.

This time we all stand up and make our way inside. Pete stops me, just outside. “We have a lot to fucking talk about.”

“Yeah I know.”

He nods and then we head inside to eat. While we sit down, I notice that Luna doesn’t join us. I want to ask why, but right now that seem more like a death wish.

Pete and I decided to go golfing. Maybe his plan is to bury me in the sand pit. I’ve lost my mind saying yes and he hasn’t spoken one word to me since he asked me to go. Before we left, Sara had told us that Luna had been in her room writing all morning and didn’t want to be bothered.

I think she’s just been trying to avoid me, but what is she going to do when she finds out that I told her parents. I’m sure she would’ve wanted to be there, but there is nothing I can do about it now.

“Are we going to talk about this?” I’m stupid for asking, but I’m safe right now since he’s driving.

His jaw clenches over and over and I swear I can hear him grind his teeth, but he doesn’t speak. Finally, he glances at me before staring out the windshield. “You had sex with my stepdaughter and got her pregnant.”

“I know. I swear to God we were safe.” I know we were, except for last night, of course. She is the only person I have ever been inside of bare. Luna felt so fucking good, it scared me. Now’s not the time to be thinking about that.

“What’s your plan? I know you like to be free, but you can’t do that with a baby. They would cramp your style.” Pete pulls into the parking lot of the country club, but we don’t get out of the car.

“Cramp my style? Give me a little credit here.” I know I’ve been a lot wilder and have embraced the manwhore title, but these are two innocent people, and one of them is a baby.

Pete turns to face me. “What are the fucking odds?” He shakes his head and sighs. “Don’t hurt her. You’re my brother, but that girl means a helluva lot to me. What do you plan on doing?”

That’s the question I’ve avoided thinking about because I just don’t know. I don’t want to hurt anyone, and this needs to be handled delicately. Whenever I’ve looked to the future, I’ve always seen myself continuing to travel the world, taking photos of gorgeous people.

How would a baby figure into that? “Honestly, I don’t know. I’ve enjoyed getting to know her, but do I look like father material to you?”

“When I was your age, did I seem like father material to you?” He’s right about that. My brother was a wild ladies’ man until he met Sara. “I was ready to spend the rest of my life enjoying the single life, but that all changed.”
