I nod, but sigh. “That’s you man, not me, or at least it hasn’t been me.”

“I just want you to really think about what you want before you do anything.” Pete opens his car door. “Now let’s golf.”

Chapter 10

Luna

There is a knock on my door and Mom pops her head in. “Do you have a second to talk?” She comes in and sits on the end of the bed.

I turn in my desk chair to face her. “What’s going on? You look upset.”

She rubs her hand on her thighs. “Um… well, Sebastian told us that he’s the father of the baby. Is that true?”

My stomach turns and my heart beats rapidly in my chest. The baby doesn’t like it because I feel her flutter around. I rub a hand over my stomach and nod. “Yes, he’s the father.” I stand up and start pacing back and forth. “Do you hate me? Does Pete? Oh god Mom, Pete is going to be Papa and Uncle. What will people think?”

Mom gets up and grabs me by my shoulders. “I could never hate you. Do you hear me. Pete could never hate you either. We love you, sweetheart. We love our granddaughter.” She grabs me and pulls me into a tight hug, before sitting back down on the bed, and she grabs my hand. “I’m worried, I’ll admit. I don’t know if Sebastian is father material.”

“I am more than prepared to do this alone, Mom.”

She wraps her arms around me. “I know sweetheart. There is no doubt in my mind that you will make the best mother to that little girl.” Mom pulls back and her eyes are filled with tears. “I tried so hard to keep things normal for you, or what I thought normal should be—being a single mom. There were nights I’d sit outside your room and cry, wondering if I was failing you.” A tear slides down her cheek, “but I see what an amazing woman you’ve turned out to be and I know I did something right.”

Now, I’m a sobbing mess. “I love you so much, momma. I had the best role model. You know that, right?”

“Mommy? Lulu?” Nicky comes busting in my room. He jumps on my bed and wraps his arms around my neck. “I want a snack.”

The cutie pie is always hungry. “I want a snack, too. Let’s go.” I kiss his forehead and then stand. We head downstairs and Mom and I cut some fruit and veggies up and sit out by the pool while we eat them.

“How’s the story you’re working on?” Mom is my biggest fan and my biggest supporter.

“Great, finally. I mean I finally have a solid first chapter. I’m hoping to release it before the baby comes, that way I can take my own sort of maternity leave.” I’ve been putting money into savings to cover me in case sales aren’t where I want them to be while I’m not working.

Mom grabs my hand. “I think that’s a great idea. You’ll want time to bond with her.”

Nicky comes around the table we’re sitting at and touches my belly. “Do you think the baby likes me?” He smiles at me and makes my heart swell.

I love this freaking kid so much. “Of course, she does. You’re her uncle Nicky.” Grabbing a piece of mango, I pop it into my mouth. “I’m going to go write a little longer.” I look down at my brother as I stand up. “Maybe you and me will go get some ice cream later. How does that sound?”

He gets up and starts dancing in a little circle. “Oh yeah. Oh yeah.” Nicky sings.

I then, make my way inside.

Knock, knock, knock…

“Come in.” I call out, as I stand and stretch my back.

The door opens and it’s Pete. “Can I come in?”

My heart starts to race. Is he mad at me? Does he hate Sebastian now? Do I need to move back to Chicago? “Su-Sure.” He closes the door behind him. Before I let him speak, I whisper. “Are you mad at me?”

His eyes soften as he steps closer to me. “No, sweetheart. I’m not mad at you at all.”

I step into his open arms, and he hugs me tight. He strokes a hand down my hair. “What about Sebastian?”

Pete steps back and grabs my shoulders. “No sweetheart, I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

“I won’t get hurt. I promise, no matter if he wants to be involved or not.”

He kisses the top of my head, before leaving my room, and shutting the door behind him.
