If we’re going to make this work, I must apologize for the way I’m acting. I’m not a petulant child, though he probably thinks so after tonight.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be obstinate. I knew this was going to be a difficult road for me but it is all happening so quickly and I’m still trying to figure out how I ended up here.”

“With the amount of luggage you brought, I’d say maybe a bus or van brought you.”

His eyes dance as he teases me and for a brief moment I feel relaxed. My smile matches his as I roll my eyes.

“Would you like me to continue, or are you done for the night?”

I take a moment to think about my answer before responding. “I’d like to hear the rest of the rules. As overwhelming as they are, I could use the rest of my night to process all of this.”

He continues with the same cool tone as before. “Rule eight is a reminder that honesty is the only policy when getting to know someone. Rule number nine is to always communicate. I generally lump them together when I’m explaining them.”

Those make sense. As a practicing lawyer details and communication are a huge part of my job. My mother always said that I had a tic and she could tell when I was lying because I’d unconsciously look down. I’ve worked hard to overcome it, but some days it gets the best of me.

“I agree and understand both of those.”

“The last one is to leave the past behind you. Simply said, the new guy in your life doesn’t want to hear about the old guy in your life,” he says matter of factly.

“Well, it’s a good thing the last ex I had was in college and I’m past the age of talking about that part of my life.”

A panty-dropping smile crosses Xan’s face. Though my panties haven’t fallen off, they are extremely wet.

I drink the rest of my wine and push the chair back. “Thank you for taking the time to explain the rules to me. Is there anything I need to do tomorrow while you’re at work?”

He stands and picks up both of our glasses and sits them near the sink. “There will be a list of questions for you to answer before I get home. My housekeeper will be in, but you’re welcome to do anything around the apartment. If you have a preference for dinner, please let her know.”

I nod and turn toward my room. “Have a good night. I’ll see you in the morning.”

Glancing down at my watch, it’s much later than I realized, so I head to the bathroom for a long hot shower to relax and help me find my sanity because it has to be lost or I wouldn’t be in this place.

Kollyns

SO MANY QUESTIONS

Teach Kollyns How to Date Day 2

A shadow on the ceiling attracts my attention while I lie in this unfamiliar bed trying to decide whether I need to get up. Glancing at my phone on the bedside table, the clock shows that it’s only a bit after four, so there is no way I’m getting up this early when I don’t have to go to work. I roll over to my side and Mr. Big lifts his head to give me the evil eye, as I move my legs where he was sitting comfortably.

I listen to the quiet hum of the air conditioner and the fan, pulling my knees up to my chest. Then I count my breaths.

In. Out.

In. Out.

Sometime later I wake to the sun high in the sky and a rumbling stomach. “Good morning,” I say to Mr. Big, who purrs and stretches. “Guess we should go see what there is to eat in this place.” Swinging my legs off the bed, I stumble to the bathroom, rubbing my eyes that are heavy with sleep and dryness.

It doesn’t take me long to take care of business and brush my teeth. Looking in the mirror, my hair is a serious rat's nest, but I’ll shower and take care of it after coffee and some food. I dig around in my makeup bag and dig out a hair tie, pulling it up in a messy bun and then heading to the kitchen.

Stopping in front of the coffee pot, I notice there is a mug with a coffee pod and a note in it. Pulling out the pod first, I set the pot to brew and slide the cup under.

“Good morning, Kollyns.” It begins. Seriously, why can’t the man call me KJ like everyone else.

“Each morning I’ll leave you a question or questions. Please send me a text with your answer, and in the evening we will discuss it and I’ll give you my answer.” I read out loud to myself, rolling my eyes.

Damn, this man. I wonder if I can plead the fifth on any of these? What if I don’t want to share? Tonight we’re going to have a discussion regarding this because I reserve the right to not answer.
