Xan opens the door and I’m focused on getting inside so I can take my shoes off because my feet hate me. This is why I wear my extra padded granny shoes, as Xan calls them. My feet don’t yell at me to count the steps until I can take them off, unlike tonight.

Walking through the door, I freeze in place and the fact that my feet hurt is no longer in the front of my mind. A giant blue tarp runs from the laundry room into the living room. There are metal pipes on the tarp with dirty water everywhere.

Geez, I just thought he wasn’t a serial killer, but now I’m rethinking that. Why would there be a tarp and metal pipe on the floor of this million-dollar penthouse if he wasn’t going to kill me.

I hear the door close behind us and then Xan begins talking as though there is nothing sinister going on here.

“Are you hungry? I’m sure there is something I can heat up for us.” Then he walks to the kitchen, not even noticing what is going on.

“Um.” I point at the tarp and try to get the words out. “Why do you want to feed me if you plan to kill me tonight?”

I’m aware that I sound like a loon, but what else would I think? Everything that is going on in this apartment tonight is so out of the norm. Xan is a certifiable neat freak and this is anything but.

“I’m confused. What makes you think I'm going to kill you?” His deep voice would normally make me feel safe and comforted, but not tonight.

“Because,” I shout and keep pointing, “look at the floor.”

Xan walks out of the kitchen to where I’m standing and stops, pulling me into his side. “Really, Kollyns? They called when we were at the club to tell me the apartment below me had water leaking into it and I told them to go ahead and do what they needed to.”

I turn in his arms, putting mine around his back and leaning my head into his chest. “Well, I feel like an asshole.”

He picks me up and I wrap my legs around him, pushing myself onto him and not letting go. “But next time, can you at least tell me what we’re going to be walking into?”

He nuzzles my neck and kisses my ear. “I should have said something, but I thought they’d be done by the time we got back.”

My body heats and I forgive him for scaring me to death. Instead I’m going to make him pay by torturing him until he can’t keep his hands off me.

Chapter 17

Xan

GUARD YOUR PEACE

Teach Kollyns How to Date Day Thirteen

“Tomorrow is move out day. Is there anything you want to talk about?” I ask Kollyns. She picks at her nails and I know she’s a bit antsy because our time is up. It’s going to be super quiet once she leaves and I’ll need to find someone to keep me company at night because I’ve gotten used to her being here, though I won’t miss that damn cat of hers.

Her feet are propped up on the coffee table and her bright pink toes are a pop of color that is totally unexpected. When she came home from the salon with pink on her nails and her hair chopped off, I finally saw a change in her.

My mother always says if my girlfriend or wife gets a major makeover and cuts their hair, then there is about to be a major change in our lives and I should be prepared. I guess that means it’s good that this happened before we got together.

Damn. This was not part of my plan.

Now the pink is barely left on her fingers and she is sitting on my couch wearing short shorts and her sleeping shirt tied up at the side. A sliver of her stomach shows and it takes all I have not to pull her into my lap and run my lips all over her exposed skin.

“Truth? I’m kind of sad to be going back to work. The idea of spending twelve plus hours a day in the office isn’t as appealing as it once was.” She gives me sad eyes and I understand exactly what she’s saying. Before she arrived, I worked, grabbed food before heading to the club or home to crash. I’ve done more and been less stressed since she arrived.

“Then I’ve done my job. I’m willing to bet that the rules I first gave you aren’t so bad now.”

She takes a minute to think about it. I can see the wheels turning in her mind while she considers her answer.

“Fine. You win. They’re not so bad.” She turns around and moves her legs from the table to my lap. I rub her feet and allow her to talk it out. “At first, it was annoying. My life is so regulated by rules and I wanted to learn how to be me and free of so many rules.”

A loud moan escapes her mouth and goes directly to my dick while I run my thumb up and down the arch of her foot.

“Tell me more.”

“In the beginning, I wanted to scream and yell that I already know who I am and what I want. I didn’t realize how much I was missing out on with all the work. I felt like you were telling me that I wasn’t really living. And you know what? Maybe you were. Maybe you weren’t, but I’ve realized I only survive. Day in, day out, I go to work and spend the nights with Mr. Big. I’ve done more since I’ve been with you for two weeks than I’ve done in years.”
