I keep rubbing, allowing my hands to move up her thighs while she talks. It’s important for her to talk all these things out so she knows how much she’s changed. “So, what happens now?”

“First, I need to find a new job because I can’t keep working like I do. Technically I could, but I don’t want to anymore. Then I’ll need to find an apartment in the city and sell my house . . .” She allows the words to trail off and I think she realizes what she just said.

I don’t take time to consider my words before they’re out. “Rule Eleven. You agree to give me a chance to be your man.”

My heart pounds. My dick rises. My body trembles.

She sits straight up and pulls her foot from my hands, kicking me in the stomach. “Oh shit. I’m sorry. Xan, I’m so sorry.” She crawls over to where I’m bent over because her foot is about two inches from my balls.

“Well, that’s an answer if I’ve ever gotten one,” I spit out, holding my stomach.

“No. Yes. No.” Kollyns throws her head back and her hands into the air. “Ugh. Can we start over?”

I nod and suck in a huge breath of air.

“I’m sorry I kicked you. You caught me off guard.” Then she maneuvers herself into my lap and wraps herself around me.

“Yes, to giving you a chance. But . . .” The words trail off and I can only imagine what the but is. “But Mr. Big comes too. I won’t give him up for you. Plus, if I did, you wouldn’t want me because who’s to say I wouldn’t give up on you just as quickly.”

Wow. She’s getting deep here, and she’s not wrong. If she gave up on that nasty cat who’s been her four-legged person all these years, I wouldn’t want her. She is a woman willing to grow and change but being loyal is the one thing I would hate for her to change about herself.

I tip her head back and our eyes connect.

“I know I’ve not said it, but I’m going to say it now. I am falling for you, Kollyns Jayne Parker. I understand your dedication to work. I adore you and the fact that you’re willing to take chances in life. I love that your best friend is obsessed with sex and making you learn what you need from a man. I can’t wait to explore the box of toys currently hiding in my closet. I love your smile and your kind heart.”

Once the words are out, I realize I probably sound like a chick, but I don’t care. Because I do like all those things about her.

“Alexander. Hey, what is your middle name? Lake.” She pokes me in the chest.

“Bartholomew. Alexander Bartholomew Lake. And yes, my parents must have hated me.” Then she lets out a loud snort, and we both laugh.

“Alexander Bartholomew Lake. I think I may like you . . . or even love you. Even though you make me question everything I know about myself. And that you put up with Mr. Big. You take me to The Mad Chicken. I love that you want me to be the best version of me, and you are okay that I can’t cook.”

About that time, Mr. Big comes prancing into the living room and jumps onto the back of the couch, strolling over to where Kollyns is on my lap. He steps on her head and then jumps into her lap, purring loudly.

“Yes, Mr. Big. Xan says he loves you too.” She kisses him all over and I laugh, then try not to cringe that I was going to kiss her but I don’t want to kiss a cat.

“I know that Xan isn’t going to kiss me since I’ve been kissing all over you, so maybe you need to give him a kiss.”

My eyes bug out of my head just as the cat jumps from Kollyns’s lap to my shoulder and starts licking my hair. “Ahhh,” I holler and he doesn’t even move. Letting go of her, I swat at the cat and try to get him off my shoulder.

“Well, it must be love because you’ve not killed him yet,” Kollyns smarts off, then she leans over and kisses me hard on the lips.
