Now that I’m here, I going to find a dark corner of the yard to hide in, or maybe I should grab my things and make a mad dash to my SUV before Griggs can get a total dose of Mia and Taylor. No sooner do I plot my escape route than Griggs walks through the gate. “Damn, that man and his timing.”

Griggs saunters into the backyard like the god he is; time has done his body good. Although Griggs was fine before the tattoos and piercings, now that he’s older, the swagger is real. “You might want to close your mouth.”

“Huh?” My head snaps around to find Haven standing next to me.

“I was literally talking to you for five minutes,” she giggles. “Yeah, I can see why Griggs is a legend around here.”

“Can you imagine him going toe to toe in the courtroom? The man oozes sex.” I swallow hard, drinking him like the beer he’s pressing to his lips.

Haven snaps her fingers in front of me. “Girl, if you don’t stop looking at him like that, you’re going to be pregnant before the night is over.”

“I just can’t stop myself, he’s a ‘throw me down and fuck me hard kinda guy, and I’m here for it.” Haven gawks at me for a split second when we finally break into a fit of laughter.

“Tell me how you really feel; why don’tcha!” Haven bumps into my shoulder, fanning herself with her hand. “But you ain’t wrong.”

I shrug, watching as Griggs wanders away from Raith. “Well, we both know that was a lifetime ago, and my life has changed too much to include the likes of Griggs Black. Although, a girl can dream.”

“The way he’s looking at you, I think it’s more like a reality if you’d just say yes.” Haven glances at Griggs, staring at me when I risk a peek.

Griggs is walking straight toward me, and I spook. Trying to play it off, I get flustered and lose my balance. I reach out, hoping to steady myself and praying I don’t faceplant into the sandbox.

I feel his arms around me before I see them. I’m baptized in his scent, sending me spiraling into a frenzy. His voice sweeps past my ear, warming me as desire pools deep in my belly.

“I’ve got you.” I open my eyes to find myself facing down at the ground. He spins me in his arms, pulling me up on my feet. The minute our gaze locks, he’s focused on me.

“Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you?” Griggs scans my body without letting me go, and I swoon as his forehead creases with concern.

“I should’ve known.” I quip.

“What’s that, Hunter?” His top lip quirks.

I clutch his arms, allowing his arms to tighten around me. “You’d never let me fall, even for you.”

“Don’t you think one of us doing it is enough?”

“I think doing it together would be more interesting.” My heart skips when Griggs unleashes his boyish grin on me.

“Are you flirting with me, Hunter?” Griggs is in his element, and it shows. Taylor approaches us with Raith not far behind. I can’t help but snicker; Griggs has no clue what’s about to happen. It’s like high school all over again, except my brother isn’t the one he should be afraid of this time.

“Hey, sis!” Raith yells. “Are you okay?”

Griggs looks at Raith and then back at me. “She’s fine as hell.”

“Huh?” Raith responds as Griggs releases me, but before I can answer Raith, Taylor rushes in head first.

“Let go, my momma!” Taylor screams and proceeds to headbutt Griggs in the groin. Griggs automatically folds over, holding himself in more ways than one.

Raith winces, picking Taylor up and getting him away from Griggs as fast as he can. “Ughh, not there, little dude!”

“Yeah, definitely not there,” I murmur, sending Raith into a meltdown by the look of his reddening face.

“You wanna get Taylor? I’ll take care of Griggs.” Raith snaps as Griggs is finally capable of catching his breath.

I squeeze past Griggs, grabbing Taylor and heading in the opposite direction. “Taylor, there’s a time and place for everything, and this wasn’t it. You’re not leaving a great impression, son.”

“I saved momma.” Taylor pats my face with his tiny hand, and my heart implodes.

“I suppose you did, but maybe don’t lead with your head next time.” Taylor doesn’t know what’s happening but to have my high school crush beaten up by my three-year-old isn’t the day I had hoped for.
