Glancing over my shoulder, I found his gaze on me exactly as I’d expected, but rather than doing the smart thing, he wrapped his large hand around Addilyn’s and strode toward my table as though he had set up another meeting.

Swallowing hard, I glanced around the diner, wondering what the fuck he planned.

He motioned Addilyn into the booth across from me, and he followed her in, settling near soundless onto the vinyl seat.

Our focus remained locked on each other, and I didn’t dare look at his wife for fear he’d knife me on the spot.

He was definitely the sort, considering the bodies—or lack thereof—in the aftermath of his vengeance.

“What can I get for you?” The waitress appeared beside us.

“We’ll have burgers with a side of fries and chocolate shakes,” Gideon told the older woman without glancing away from me.

“No.” Addilyn elbowed him. “I’ll have the Cobb salad with Italian dressing—oh, and hold the onions, please.”

“Sure thing, sugar.” The waitress scribbled on a notepad. “And what about you, love?” she asked me again.

“I’m fine. Thanks.”

“If you change your mind, just let me know,” she replied before ambling away.

“What are you doing?” I asked Gideon, keeping my voice low, my lips barely moving.

“Sitting down to enjoy lunch with an old friend.”

I dared a glance at Addilyn, and even though a wide smile lit her eyes, the sight of her close up didn’t steal my breath or punch me in the gut like I had expected, considering all the pining I’d been doing since half of forever.

“We saw you through the window while driving by, and I told Gideon to turn around,” she stated brightly, eyes still shining.

“Aren’t you afraid someone will see us and start putting puzzle pieces together in their brain like I did?” I asked, turning back to Gideon, even more uncomfortable in my skin due to my lack of emotional reaction to Addilyn’s presence.

“I’m not afraid of anything.” The arrogant jerk sounded like a serious asshole. What did Addilyn see in him?

I raised an eyebrow at his bold declaration before glancing at his wife. “If I had such a woman at my side, I’d fear losing her every day of my life,” I murmured, giving him my eyes once more.

A slow smirk lifted his lips, the usual glint of ice in his steely gaze melting the slightest bit. “I won’t allow anything to happen to my Addilyn.”

She huffed, rolling her eyes at his possessive tone. “You aren’t an all-powerful god, jackass.”

Gideon tugged her close, his lips ghosting over her ear. “That’s not what you said last night while coming all over my dick, princess.”

“TMI,” I grumbled as she shifted away from Gideon, even though not one trace of jealousy swelled over me at the thought of him loving on her body.

Her chin lifted, and her head tipped to the side as she stared at him in a rare display of sassiness I hadn’t seen before. Pink flushed her cheeks as their gazes held.

Lust crackled between the two, that blush turning bright red across her face and creeping down her neck. She licked her lower lip before sucking it into her mouth.

Gideon narrowed his eyes, a corner of his mouth curling as though reading her mind and knowing his words had turned her on.

Covetousness should have torn through me at their intimate moment mere feet away from me, but I sat unmoved both physically and emotionally.

Bored, almost, if not for the surprising display of non-shyness Addilyn portrayed in how she stared her husband down. Had I misread her as being a timid woman when talking her up over our date while she barely touched her pizza? Had I gotten her character completely wrong? The woman I studied was not the same one I’d fought to keep entertained when we’d gone out while Gideon had been locked up behind bars.

Addilyn vibrated with spirit, her eyes flashing with a teasing light.

She’d been slowly dying back then, I realized—for him.

He’d brought her fully back to life, probably to the woman she’d been before I’d first seen her, when I’d been attracted to her shy, quiet demeanor.
