Dinner, share a bottle of wine, a sweet kiss goodnight at Ciarra and Josh’s apartment door.

But the second Nissa Kelly walked into Geo’s, all thoughts fled my mind but devouring every inch of her glowing skin. The dimmed music faded in my ears as my senses turned fully on to the vision of her.

A white sundress clung to her curves and stood out stark against her tan, her black hair in gentle waves over her shoulders, down to her waist. She’d darkened her makeup from what she’d painted her face with earlier in the day, but it didn’t distract from her beauty one fucking bit.

And the bright red on her lips…

My dick jolted in my dress pants, suddenly strangled in its prison. Everything about the small woman called that hint of darkness inside me to rise to the surface.

Her face lit up, her eyes sparkling when she caught my gaze across the crowded restaurant. She hurried toward me like a shark bent on sinking its sharp teeth into its meal.

I stood to greet her, obvious hard length be damned. Nissa already knew what she did to me, and if the sexual tension between us in the parking lot at work earlier that morning was any indication, we both had high hopes for the evening ahead.

Nissa’s quick glance down over my dress shirt and tie while she approached heightened the color on her cheeks, and a flick of her tongue over her lower lip let me know she noticed how the sight of her turned me on.

“Hey.” She once more greeted me with her husky, breathless tone that sent another shot of lust through my groin as she sidled close.

Not taking a bite out of me, thank fuck. Dishing out the slightest bit of pain with pleasure was my kink—not the other way around.

I leaned down to kiss her cheek, sucking the scent of coconuts and lime into my lungs.

Hell, if she tasted half as good as she smelled, I would reach heaven’s gates before midnight.

I pulled out her high-backed chair and slid back into mine across the square table as she settled. We both grinned. Sat silent for a few seconds, our gazes locked as I enjoyed the rare, real happiness curving my lips. I felt…free. To be myself, to explore in ways I’d never allowed while searching for the perfect demure woman I’d thought I wanted by my side.

Well, fuck that.

Nissa lit me up from the inside out, that hint of danger intriguing enough I told myself I could handle another toss into the friend zone.

I expected eventually losing myself in her would be worth every damn second.

Our waiter in his black slacks and crisp white button-down descended like a hovering seagull. I ordered a bottle of red without confirming with Nissa first, but she didn’t argue or ask for something different before he turned away, leaving us alone once more and taking his one squeaking shoe with him.

“My sister has you set up on a pedestal.”

One of my eyebrows flew upward at Nissa’s statement.

I knew Ciarra held me in high regard and always had, same as she did with her new husband, but the problem with someone seeing you like that?

A tumble down always hurt like hell.

I was no angel. I’d kept knowledge of revenge and murder to myself rather than approaching the authorities. I hadn’t even spoken to Uncle about the puzzle pieces I’d put together of Gideon Destil and his wife.

I’d chosen to turn a blind eye, to allow Addilyn her happily ever after.

“I’m not any more special than the next guy.”

Nissa huffed a snort. “Ciarra might wear rose-colored glasses and think unicorns exist and shit rainbows, but she’s just like our dad and brother who are both good judges of character.”

I found myself smiling again, regardless of how I saw myself.

“And what do you think?” I hadn’t meant to fish, but it sounded that way even to my own ears as I leaned forward as though desperate for her answer.

“That you’re fine as fuck, and if my pain in the ass sister believes you’re a catch, who am I to argue?”

Warmth spread through me.

“Though, I don’t know why the hell she would entrust you to me for dancing at their reception. Hell knows I’m not on a damn pedestal in her mind.” Nissa snapped her jaw shut, snipping out the last word as though she’d spoken without thought. Annoyance pursed her lips, and a slight line dented between her eyebrows.
