Chapter 3

Mazie

When I finish class, I roll my mat up and turn out the lights in the studio. Alicia is wiping down the countertops, and Mya and Emma stand over by the door whispering.

“I think they’re waiting for you,” Alicia says.

“Oh, hey, what’s up?” I ask as I walk closer to them. They’re both stunning. Emma with her blonde hair and fair skin, and Mya with her wild dark curls and gorgeous eyes. And they both happen to be rock stars in my class the one day a week they are able to make it.

Let’s just say that I’m certain the reason I now have half a class filled with guys has a lot to do with these two. The fact that they both have giant rocks on their wedding fingers doesn’t keep the guys from checking them out.

“We were wondering if you’d want to grab a drink at Mean Mug with us?” Emma says.

I rarely go out. I work a lot. I don’t have a lot of spare money for things like this, but I like them.

“Sure. I don’t know where Mean Mug is. Am I dressed okay to go in my workout clothes?”

“Yes,” Mya insists, reaching for my hand and leading me out the door. “We can walk. It’s right down the street. You’re dressed perfectly.”

We walk the two blocks down to the bar, and the temperature isn’t too chilly yet, so I just zip up my hoodie and it keeps me plenty warm. They tell me about working at the same law firm, Emma full-time and Mya part-time, and they’re married to brothers. Between the two of them, they have five kids and their standing date with each other is Pilates and happy hour one night a week, while their husbands watch the kids.

“And you were best friends before you got married to brothers and worked together? That’s so cool. I love that you make time for each other and yourselves like that,” I tell them.

When we take our seats at the high-top table, the conversation flows easy, and we each order a fancy martini.

“So, tell us about you?” Emma asks as she sips her drink.

“There’s not a whole lot to share. I graduated from NYU in May, and I’ve been searching for a job.” I sigh. “So, in the meantime, I work at Gino’s Diner near the studio and teach Pilates a few days a week.”

“I love Gino’s Diner. They have the best pastrami on rye. I didn’t know you worked there. What did you get your degree in?” Mya asks.

“Business management. I had no idea it would be so hard to find a job. I keep sending out résumés, but I haven’t had any luck yet.”

They both share a look before Emma speaks first. “Mazie, how would you feel about applying at our law firm? Our office manager is leaving in ten days, and everyone is freaking out because we haven’t found her replacement yet.”

“Really?” I ask, my heart pounding in my chest. I don’t know what the pay is, but it must be better than what I’m currently making. “Is it permanent or is she coming back at some point?”

“Nope. She’s moving out of the city. So, we need someone who is willing to be there full time for the long haul. I don’t know what the pay is, but Miranda always alludes that Jack, our boss, is very generous.”

“Okay,” I say, unable to hide my smile. “Tell me where to apply.”

“We’ll take care of that,” Mya says as she frantically types into her phone. “All right. I just texted our boss. Can you come in tomorrow morning at eight o’clock and meet with Jack and Aidan? They’re doing all the interviews and Jack said they have three interviews tomorrow, but he could squeeze you in first.”

“Yes. I can be there. Oh my gosh, what do I wear? I don’t have a suit, but I have a few blouses and a black pencil skirt. Would that work?” I ask, and I can’t hide the smile on my face.

“Girl, you’re going to knock them dead. Blouse, pencil skirt, and a pair of heels. Although, you could probably come in a paper bag and everyone would be dazzled,” Emma says, squeezing my hand. “I have a good feeling about this.”

I hope she’s right.

We spend the next two hours talking and laughing as they fill me in on all the office dynamics. It’s the most fun I’ve had since I graduated. I haven’t seen my friends much, as most everyone has started working full time and I’ve been juggling the two jobs.

I hurry home afterward and iron my white blouse and my black skirt, and when I get in bed, I can’t stop thinking about everything that I might be asked. But eventually sleep takes over, and my alarm is buzzing before I know it.

I splurge on an Uber to the office so I won’t risk getting sweaty, as it’s unseasonably warm this morning for September, plus I haven’t walked in heels in a long time.

When I step out of the car, I glance down at my phone and realize I’m forty minutes early, so I decide to stop by Starbucks. With today being my (hopefully) lucky day, I splurge on my favorite, a pumpkin spice chai latte. I’m sipping my tea as I walk back to the building for my interview. All that pumpkin goodness explodes on my tongue as I make my way through the lobby, and the elevator doors open, and I step on. A man walks on behind me, and I glance up and my eyes lock with the most beautiful blue eyes I’ve ever seen.

Familiar beautiful blue eyes.
