“What did I say? Does the word banging offend you? I know you Generation Z’ers are a little, um, sensitive about wording.” Emma leans in.

I roll my eyes. “The word bang does not offend me.”

“What is it then?” Mya asks as she reaches for my hand.

I shake my head. I don’t want to go there. It’s a bit of a happy hour buzzkill. But I can’t stop myself. “My father had an affair with his secretary. I imagine he was banging her for quite a while, while still being married to my mother.”

“Fucking chip on a cracker,” Emma hisses.

“There’s no sense saying chip on a cracker if you’ve already dropped the F-bomb. And that’s two carbs anyway. At least add a little cheese.” Mya chuckles as she turns to face me. “Mazie, that had to be terrible. But your father was married. And I don’t know if his mistress was?”

“She was,” I say as a tear streaks down my face. “They blew up two families, all to run off and start their own.”

“That motherfucker.” Emma sighs, before scooching her barstool closer to me. “But you do know that’s a different situation. It wouldn’t matter whether they worked together or not. They were both in committed relationships. So, they would be dicksnots no matter where they worked.”

Fair point. Never thought of it that way. And I learned early on that Emma and Mya have a long slew of dick words that I have never even thought of imagining. Thanks to their husbands. Manages to take the sting out of even the toughest conversations.

“You and Aidan are both single. And, not that I’m pressuring you, but you’re both amazing people. I’d hate to see you push him away because of what your father did.” Mya smiles, and I swipe at the tears running down my face and nod.

“Hasn’t that fucker taken enough from you? Don’t let your dad take your happiness, Mazie. He’s done enough.” Emma raises a brow and I lean forward as they both wrap their arms around me.

These girls feel more like sisters than friends lately and I haven’t even known them that long.

And they’re right about a lot of things.

My father has taken enough from me.

Chapter 12

Aidan

I’m walking home, reminding myself why I can’t text Mazie. She’s pulling away. I know it in my gut. We’ve been spending a lot of time together outside of work, and it’s been amazing.

I want more.

I know she does too, but she’s so damn terrified, she won’t even allow herself to consider it.

I won’t push. I’ve already let her know I’d like more, and she shut me down.

And her gynecologist appointment was complete bullshit. I know this because I called my mother to make sure I wasn’t being paranoid and just asked her if most gynos work evenings to conduct yearly examinations. Her exact words were, “You can only spend so many hours in the day examining the vagina. And those hours are bank hours. Unless you’re pushing out a tiny human.”

I wish I’d never asked.

Bottom line, Mazie was lying to me.

And that doesn’t sit well with me.

Hell, maybe she had a date and she just didn’t want to tell me.

My phone rings and Sabrina’s number lights up on the screen. A college buddy of mine, Drake, is married to Sabrina and she happens to be an incredible realtor. She’s busy searching for a condo for me since I’m tired of giving all my money away to rent.

“Hey, how’s it going?”

“It’s going well. I have a few listings that haven’t hit the market yet that I got from a guy in the office, and I wanted to go over them with you. Are you off work?”

“Yes. Just heading home.” I pause to see what she’s going to say as a car passes and a young woman leans out the window, flashing me her tits as she shouts, “Do you want to get lucky tonight, Daddy?”

What the fuck.
