Not in the slightest. What was he doing in Sunset River? And what were the odds? The world was really a small place if he lived here. He wasn’t from here because I would’ve remembered him.

“He’s here,” I managed to choke out.

“Who’s here?”

“Rhett. The man from the club in Miami.”

“Two-night stand Rhett? What the hell are the odds?” I could tell by the tone in his voice he was trying not to laugh. The asshole.

“I have no idea. I’m going to try to sneak the hell out of here without him noticing me. I don’t think I could face him today and speak a coherent sentence. My brain is on overload.”

“I’ll call you when I close the studio and talk to you until you fall asleep,” he repeated.

“Thank you. I’ll let you go so you can focus on the drive. Call me after you close the studio,” I told Ramiro as I planned my escape.

“Love you, Alora.”

“Love you back, Ramiro,” I replied and ended the call.

Rhett and two other men were at the counter placing their orders.

I could easily sneak out and be on my merry way. This was a small town, but I could avoid him while I was here. I’d stay holed up in my grandmother’s house if I had to and only leave to meet with the lawyers. As much as I wanted to have his arms around me again, I knew what would happen if that occurred.

I wouldn’t want to leave them.

Grabbing my purse off the table, I shoved my phone inside and picked up my latte.

When I stood, the chair fell behind my, making a loud noise as it crashed on the floor.

I froze and looked over to the counter where I’d last seen him.

He wasn’t facing the barista anymore.

His eyes had sought out the cause of the noise and were now focused solely on me. A shocked expression filled his features as if he couldn’t believe I was standing here.

My heart pounded as I thought of a way to get out of the confrontation I was sure would occur.

My flight instinct kicked in, and I quickly picked up the chair and pushed it under the table and hurried out the door.

I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. I just knew I couldn’t face him. Not after the stress of today. Not while my emotions were all over the place.

“Dream girl,” I heard him shout as I stepped off the sidewalk and into the street.

I paused briefly and debated if I should pretend I didn’t hear him or run in the direction of where I’d parked the car.

Before I could make my decision, I heard someone scream, “Watch out,” but I didn’t move in time. Looking to my left, all I could see was a bicycle coming straight at me.

The man on the bicycle was coming down the hill too fast to stop. He swerved to miss me but not enough. I felt his hand reach out to push me out of the way, but I lost my balance and fell backward.

The last thing I remembered was my head hitting the edge of the sidewalk before everything went black.

Chapter 7

Rhett

There was no way she was here. The woman whom I couldn’t stop thinking about for the past three months. In forty-eight hours, she’d made such an impression. I’d felt like our souls had connected in such a short time. That might make me sound like a pansy, but I didn’t care. One night in her presence and I wanted more. So much more that I begged her to give me just one more night. I’d thought I’d get her out of my system. We’d spent that Saturday together lounging on the couch watching movies and ordering room service. And the sex. It was out of this world.

When she ran out the door to the coffee shop, I knew I couldn’t let her get away again. I had to stop her. There was no way we’d cross paths twice and I’d let her leave without a means to contact her again. If that was what she wanted.
