I left my drink on the counter and raced after her.

“Dream girl,” I yelled as soon as I stepped out onto the sidewalk. The nickname was fitting for two reasons. One, because her name meant dreamer. She thought I was corny as hell when I looked up the meaning while we were snuggled together on the couch. The second reason was because she was my dream girl. From just the short time I'd spent with her, I could tell she was everything I’d ever wanted in a woman I’d call my own. She had this spunky, down to earth attitude. She was gorgeous as hell. And she fit perfectly in my arms. There were more attributes that I could name, but right then my mind could only focus on not letting her get away.

She paused briefly as she stepped off the curb but didn’t turn around.

I waited.

Hoping she’d turn back to face me.

“Watch out,” I heard someone scream off to the left.

Everything happened so fast.

I didn’t have time to move to save her before she was pushed to the side, and she fell back.

Her head hit the pavement so hard I heard it crack off the concrete.

“Fuck,” I yelled.

I rushed over to her side to assess the situation, immediately going into work mode.

Everyone had always told me it was different when you’d see a loved one or someone you knew hurt and had to help them. Now I knew what they meant.

“Alora, can you hear me?” I asked as I knelt by her side.

No response.

I felt her neck and checked for her pulse. Her heartbeat was still strong.

“Juarez, come outside,” I barked into my radio.

Carefully, I held her neck in place as I moved her to lay flat on the ground.

Thankfully, there wasn’t an open wound on the back of her head.

“Yeah, Davenport,” he shouted as he exited Toasted Bean.

“Grab a backboard and neck brace out of the back of the rig.”

“Oh shit. Is she okay? What happened?”

“She fell when a biker passing by pushed her out of his path. Fucker just kept going. She’s not responding. Let dispatch know and alert the hospital.”

He came back moments later with the backboard and neck brace.

I secured the neck brace around her neck, then we rolled her on her side. After placing the back board behind her, we rolled her over and secured her. I grabbed her purse and placed it on top of her.

We lifted her off the ground and rushed over to the back of the rig that was a short distance away.

“You drive. I’ll stay in the back with her,” I instructed. Juarez gave me an odd look, but he didn’t question me as we opened the door to the rig and placed her on the gurney in the back.

He closed the door and tapped the back twice. I sat beside her and checked her airway and pulse again. Still strong.

She let out a moan just as I removed my fingers from her wrist.

“Welcome back, Alora.” I smiled down at her.

“Where am I?” she groaned, lifting her hand to her head.
