Lockie stares at the both of us for a moment, seemingly lost in thought. After a moment, he nods. “I agree with Harl. I think this may be important. Maybe someone is trying to tell you something?” He shrugs. “I don’t know. But we do appreciate you telling us, Cal. It means a lot.” Lockie pulls me into his arms and squeezes me. “I hope whatever you find will finally bring you happiness.” He whispers in my ear.

My phone starts buzzing from my handbag, pulling me from the moment. Great. That’s probably Amy wondering where I am and demanding me to come home.

Lockie releases me from his arms, and I pull my phone from my handbag, checking my notifications.

One new notification

I swipe my phone to unlock it, press the messages app, and open the conversation.

Amy,

Where are you? We didn’t permit you to go outside, and you didn’t even ask! Get home now, or you will be in more trouble than you already are Calliope!!

I sigh and type a message back.

I’m out with Lockie and Harlow. I didn’t need permission, considering I’m 19, Amy! Fine, I’ll come back now.

I let out a huff and throw my phone back in my handbag.

“Let me guess. Amy. You’ve got to go, don’t you?” Harl asks.

I roll my eyes. “Unfortunately, yes. The bitch wants me to come home. You wait; I will find a job, save up enough, and leave that hellhole once and for all!” I yell.

“Bye, Harl, I’ll see you soon, okay?” I whisper as I pull her into my arms.

“Bye babe, see you soon. Love you,” she says back, squeezing me.

Lockie walks towards me and pulls me into a bear hug, lifting me off my feet. As he places me back on my feet, he leans to my ear and whispers, “Can I walk you to the gate?”

I look up at him, confused. Since when has he wanted to do that? I always walk myself back alone. I look over at Harl, then back to Lockie. “Mm, sure.” I shrug.

Lockie waves to Harl. “I’ll text you later, I promise.” He kisses the tips of his two fingers and holds them in the air, aiming for her.

She laughs and waves us off. “See you later, guys!”

Lockie shoves his hands into the front pocket of his jeans and nods in the direction we will be walking. “After you,” he says.

He seems nervous. This is unusual for him. “What is going on, Lockie?” I ask quickly before I lose my nerve.

He chuckles. “Can’t your best friend walk you to a gate? Is that a crime now?”

I shake my head. “No, but you have never done it before, and we always come here. Which means you want to talk to me about something.”

He physically jolts but doesn’t say a word as we walk across the field.

I wish he would blurt it out already. This is torture!

I can see the fence from where we walk now, signalling our arrival at the end of our walk, and Lockie still hasn’t said a single word. What was the point of walking me here if we were to do it in silence? I stop and turn to him with a huff. “Let it out already! What is going on?” I put my hands on my hips.

He slowly turns to face me, his face a little red. He starts to shake his head. “I don’t want to tell you, Cal. I don’t want to say it.”

Why? “But we tell each other everything. That’s what best friends are for.” I raise my eyebrow at him.

He pins me with his gaze, and I cannot look away once again. “What if I don’t want to be just friends any more.” He closes the gap between us and pulls my face to his. Gently, he presses his lips against mine.

Alyx

Ihit the ground with a thud and see nothing but darkness. No! I refuse to be stuck here again! I scream into the abyss of my subconscious.
