She pouts as I turn and walk away from her.

Lennox pats my arm as I approach him and the others. “Hey! Alyx, nice of you to finally join us.”

“I don’t want to be awake right now,” I grumble.

“Well, you are here now. That is all that matters. Will you be joining us for the final ritual tomorrow night?” He asks joyfully.

The final ritual? What the fuck is he talking about? “What?” I raise my eyebrow.

“You know, the final ritual where we will finally raise what we have all been working toward all these years.” Lennox and the others cheer around me.

I think back to the cult meetings we’ve had, trying to piece together anything through the haze of drugs I was constantly under the influence of. Then, from the dark recesses of my mind, the words come to me. A prophecy, they had said.

To realise its full power, The Demon will take the power of light. The light will take the mantle from the dark.

My eyes widen as I fully process what this means, now that I’m finally sober enough to do so. They are going to raise a fucking demon. I have to stop them!

“Mm, sure, yeah. I’ll be here.”

Alyx

Whether accidentally or on purpose, it appears that I have interrupted the final ritual. It’s like any other ritual they hold at this chapel, but I’ve had enough tonight.

They’re trying to create a demon-bound human, and that doesn’t sit well with me at all. They have a woman on the slab in the middle of the room, surrounded by candles. She can’t be more than twenty years old. They always say that the younger the human, the better the host. I fucking hate that saying.

When she wakes up, she begins crying. A gag is shoved in her mouth to stop her from screaming, but that doesn’t stop the soft whimpers that escape. They are chanting stuff around her in a different language that I don’t understand, so I ignore their words and focus on the woman before me.

Soon, the candles start to flicker, and the room goes dark. I know something is happening, but I can’t believe my eyes. I’ve never truly believed in this stuff. I only joined the cult because it seemed cool at the time. That was a stupid idea. I regret it so much. Fucking idiot.

Everything starts to happen so fast; a portal opens slowly on the wall next to the woman, and I can see into what looks like the pits of hell. Flames shoot out of the portal, and those close to it take cover behind nearby rocks. Demons are floating around in there, trying to escape. Some fight each other, trying to be the one who gets made into the ‘vessel’. People all around me shout with joy, and some laugh. They are calling to the demons from the other side.

They’re chanting for the demons to make their way to the mortal plane and take what is rightfully theirs. Rightfully fucking theirs? What is wrong with these people? I watch as, one by one, the cult members start to kneel and bow their heads towards the portal, oblivious to the danger they were all truly in. Not me, though. Fuck this shit.

The only way for a demon to get out of the portal is to take over a host. Well, the host is lying on the table right now, and I have to do something about it before one of those things gets out!

At the realisation of how real and dangerous this shit is, I grab a knife from the nearest person and ran towards the table in the centre of the room.

I have to save us all! Even if that means killing one. I plunge the knife into the woman’s chest, killing her before her body can be taken over. She would have become the next vessel for that demon, and I couldn’t let that happen. I pull the knife from her chest and take a step back, letting out a sigh of relief. It should be over now. There is no longer a host.

The portal next to me begins to close. After a moment, the wall is in its place again. Is it truly over now? I look around the room.

Everyone was looking at me now with anger and disgrace in their eyes.

“What the fuck is wrong with you people? Don’t you see what you were just about to do? I’m not sorry that I fucked up your plans. Those things should not be allowed on this earth!” I look over at the woman on the table.

Her body is lifeless and covered in blood.

“But I am sorry an innocent woman had to lose her life because of it,” I say more calmly.

“How dare you! You fucked up everything, Alyx! We almost had everything we’d been working towards! We could have been unstoppable and powerful! You could have been unstoppable and powerful!” Shouts Lennox, the cult leader.

Suddenly, I’m being pushed to the ground by two men, causing me to drop the knife. I struggle against their hold the best I can, but they are stronger than me.

“You will pay for what you’ve done, Alyx,” Lennox says, walking towards me.

I glare at him from the ground. “I don’t care what you have in store for me. I did what I had to do. This was stupid and so fucking dangerous! You have no idea what you could’ve released into the world!” I spit back at him.

“We knew exactly what we were releasing into the world.” Lennox steps back and faces the crowd.
