I bark out an amused laugh. “Sure.”

“Still the love ‘em and leave ‘em motto?” He chuckles.

“I’ve never loved any of them,” I quip.

Just your sister.

I pluck a pink sugar packet from the small holder in the middle of the table to keep my hands busy.

“Not even Anna Leslie?” He grins.

“Oh fuck, not you too,” I scoff.

He laughs harder. “I’m joking. I know it’s a crock.”

I shake my head and fold the square in half. It’s on the tip of my tongue to ask about his future brother-in-law. Thank God, he beats me to it.

“So, you heard the news?” He asks as Ashley places our drinks on the table.

“News?” I quirk a row.

“Tilly.” He says with a pointed look. “Apparently she’s marrying some city douche.”

If Adam don’t like him I sure as fuck won’t.

“Yeah, that news. I’m aware.” I take a gulp of my water to wash down the foul taste in my mouth. “Clearly you don’t approve.”

“Not really, but you know how she is.” He shakes his head. “The more you push her the more she resists.”

“Tell me about it,” I mutter.

A serious expression crosses his face. “I know I’ve said it before, but you have no idea how much I appreciate you stepping in when I couldn’t.”

Not again. Not the thank you for being her other brother speech.

“I’ve never been able to get a handle on her. Dad either. You were the only one she seemed to listen to.” He chuckles again.

“It’s a gift.” I shrug, trying to lighten the mood.

His phone pings with a text and he groans.

“Whitely is blowing me up. Tilly’s avoiding her calls. I’m assuming to avoid the major ass chewing she’s got coming, so now I’m in the hot seat.”

He angles his phone to me.

Whit: WHY IN GODS NAME WOULD YOU ALLOW SOME PRISSY CITY PRICK TO PUT A RING ON HER FINGER. INTERVENTION IMMEDIATELY. IVE STALKED HIM. HE WEARS V NECK SWEATERS FOR FUCKS SAKE.

“She’s a force to be reckoned with,” I mumble.

“I feel bad for her future husband. Poor sap doesn’t have a clue.”

He isn’t wrong. Whitley Harper is the one Harper sister who could probably take me.

He ignores the text, and we spend the next half hour eating and catching up while I let my nerves settle at the fact everyone seems to already hate this guy as much as I do.

“If you aren’t busy tomorrow night, we’re having a “family” dinner. I consider you family. You should come. We get to meet city boy’s parents.” Adam grins.

Dinner with my girl and the man she’s promising to love for the rest of her years?
