I make the obvious one first. My dad.

It goes straight to voicemail. Three times. I move on to the next man I’ve always been able to count on. My brother.

He picks up on the second ring.

“Tills. What’s up?”

I can hear muffled music in the background along with laughter.

“Hey, I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m in a bind.”

“Are you hurt?” I can hear the panic pick up in his voice almost instantly.

“No, no. I’m fine. Maybe some whiplash. I tried to dodge a deer and my breaks went out. I’m stuck on the road. My hood looks like shit.”

The wind all of a sudden picks up, so I make my way back around to my side of the car.

“Where are you?” He asks.

“I’m not far from town. Just past Tarver Road,” I say as I shiver.

“Ok. I’ll be there in ten.”

He hangs up and I make the last step to my car and reach for the handle. I yank, but the door doesn’t budge. I yank again and again, then I peer through the glass.

I could scream. I’ve locked my keys in my car.

I groan out loud and turn to rest my back against the door. Why is the universe torturing me?! Probably because you let the man who broke your heart stick his tongue down your throat while your date was asleep in your bed.

Touché. Universe. Touché.

I wrap my arms around my shoulders, trying to keep them warm by rubbing my palms along my hoodie. The temperature is dropping by the second and my breath is coming out in solid puffs of white smoke.

Beep.

No.

Beep.

Damn it.

With one last beep to signal the battery was out of juice, my hearing aids died. My frozen fingers pluck them from my ears, and I shove them in my front pocket. I let out a defeated sigh just as headlights appear up the road. Relief floods my system, but the feeling was only temporary. It was replaced with burning irritation when I saw who sat behind the wheel.

Chapter 12

Greyson

“What can I get you, Grey?”

The young blonde blinks innocently at me as she holds her notepad. I wasn’t a dick, but only my friends call my me Grey. So, I give my best I’m not interested look and say. “Water and the grilled chicken plate. Grilled vegetables on the side.”

She jots it down before turning to Adam.

“Officer Roy?” She smiles.

“Coke and the bacon burger. Extra cheese.” He folds his menu then grabs mine. “Thanks Ashley.”

She walks away and Adam smirks. “I see the ladies are still fond of you.”
