I had just brushed my teeth and slapped on some moisturizer when the bathroom door opened. Greyson leans against the door frame; his dark hair tousled effortlessly on his head.

Morning. He signs.

I lift my hands. Morning.

The blinking of the clock behind him had me cursing. I brush past him, and to my closet.

I felt him follow and he frowns when I glance over to him.

Work. I sign quickly. I’m late.

He shakes his head. “You’re off today.”

I pull a black sweater from a hanger, reading his lips in the process. It’s Friday.

“I talked to Dixie. Your classes are covered today.” He grabs the sweater from my hand and tosses it to the side.

Deciding to make this easier, I move to my nightstand to put in my hearing aids.

I face him. “What did you tell her?”

“I told her you weren’t feeling well.” He sat down on the edge of my bed. “I figured you didn’t want to be bombarded with questions on what happened to your lip.”

I gently touch my face, tracing my lip with my finger. “Makes sense.”

I had a lot to do still. I hated missing work, and I had some things that were on a deadline.

“Lucy is bringing you over the things you need. I want you to rest today.” He reaches out, tugging me towards him.

I settle in between his thighs, my palms landing on his shoulders. His touch was so delicate. Like he was caressing something worth more than precious rubies.

“Do you want to talk about it?” He asks.

His fingers were on my thighs, making a soothing motion that made my cheeks blush.

I swallow before speaking. “I ended it. I told him it was over and gave back the ring.” I pause, my eyes closing as I replay last night. “He got angry. He hit me. He…” I blow out a nervous breath. “He acted as if this was just me throwing a tantrum. Like he wasn’t going to take no for an answer.”

Greyson’s hands still and he squeezes my thighs before dropping them.

“Motherfucker,” he mutters.

“I’m fine, Grey.” I tip his chin up with my hand.

“I’ll handle him.” His jaw clenches.

“Greyson.” I sigh. “I don’t want you to…”

“He fucked with what’s mine, Rosie. He’s not getting away with that.” His eyes were hard and even though it wasn’t pointed towards me, a spark of fear flickered in my stomach.

He must have seen it because he softens immediately. “Hey.” He pulls me closer. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“You didn’t,” I assure him.

I step away, putting some distance between us. He stayed last night because I was hurting. But now, it’s back to reality. I’m not a damsel in distress anymore. I have work, I’m sure he has to get back to Texas soon. He was here when I needed him.

“So…thank you for staying.” I look around the room, searching for something to do to not make this awkward. “I appreciate you helping me, but I’m sure you have things to do and need to get back to San Antonio.” I pick up the sweater he discarded, then opened a dresser drawer for some pants.

I’m too busy gathering random clothes to notice he’s standing and is now hovering behind me. I meet his gaze in the mirror when I raise up, hands full of clothes I probably won’t even wear today.
