“Yeah.” I use my fingers to gently touch the platinum band.

“Congratulations. Have y’all set a date?” She asks.

“No.” I let out a breath. “It was kind of…a fast unfolding of events.”

“It’s not like you have to get married tomorrow,” she points out.

“True.” I take a sip, closing my eyes as the flavors hit my tongue.

“Here.” She hands me the file. “This month’s volunteer list. The details of all three outreach program days, your new student requests, and as always lasts month’s achieved goal spreadsheet.”

I sigh and take the folder. “Have I mentioned you’re the best?”

“I mean, it doesn’t hurt to hear it every day.” She flicks her red hair with a lift of her shoulder.

“You’re the best Luce.” I raise my cup to her.

She chuckles. “It’s my job to take care of you, Tills. Now get to work and stop fantasizing about Blaine’s tight ass.”

I snort out a laugh as she saunters off.

His ass is nice. Not as nice as….

I shake my head, ridding myself of the heinous thought. I’m engaged. I’m happy. I’m finally letting myself be happy.

I shuffle a few papers, moving them to another stack that I should throw away, but I have a weird attachment to paper. I hate throwing anything away. Which is why my office looks like an F5 tornado did some serious damage. I’ll own my weaknesses. I’m not tidy. I’m messy and typically procrastinating, but I take this job seriously and it’s my passion, so last minute or not, I give it my all. I usually fly by the seat of pants, which explains the impromptu engagement that’s got everyone I’ve seen this morning either giving me questioning glances or overly enthusiastic well wishes.

My fingers reach up, rubbing over my temples as my phone that’s under a stack of papers chirps.

Bekka: Heads up. He’s in town.

I read the text and my stomach bottoms out. I’m not sure what the feeling is exactly. Nerves. Anger. Excitement. Dread. Hate.

I don’t even get to analyze it because there’s another knock at my door.

“Lucy...…” I begin.

As if the universe decided to shift. The atmosphere changes, and a feeling I’m all too familiar with flanks the room.

Lucy isn’t who takes up the entire doorway to my office. No. I don’t even have to spin around in my chair to know who stands in that doorway. The fresh layer of goosebumps tell me all on their own. But because I’m a professional, at work, I slowly turn, facing the open doorway.

My eyes drink in the six-foot five man that lingers in the open space. I try to keep my face neutral. I was in no way happy to see him, but I didn’t want to give off the vibe that he affects me. Because he doesn’t. Not anymore. I left my school girl crush on my brother’s best friend behind years ago. At least that’s what I tell myself.

He moves his broad shoulders and steps in, placing those piercing golden eyes on mine. My fingers clench the wooden hand rests of my chair as I force a blank expression. I’m still angry at him. Still boiling from our last interaction.

Greyson, I sign without speaking, hopefully giving off the don’t test me vibes.

But the infuriatingly gorgeous tight end just smirks and rasps out. “Hey Rosie.” While simultaneously moving his hands to sign it as well.

Butterflies exploded at the nickname, and I grit my teeth. I loathed him. Couldn’t even bare to look at him without rage and lust battling for a permanent position in my bones like it was World War three. But I knew better. Greyson Roy may be God’s gift to football, but to me, he was nothing but a walking heartache. A playboy. And I refuse to get my heart broken again.

Chapter 5

Greyson

She was so fucking pretty.

I’ve escorted super models, the occasional actress, and women of all types and tax brackets. The one’s society claims as “beautiful.” Not one of them compares to the woman that currently sits behind her desk, doing her damndest to keep her emotions in check. I learned early on how stubborn this woman was, but that stubbornness is what has set her apart. It’s what has pushed her through every challenge she’s faced since birth. And that’s the sexiest thing in the world to me.
