“Does he have any friends?” June presses her face up to Nelson’s cage. “I have a frog he can play with.”

“You don’t have a frog,” Elle deadpans.

“I do haves one.” June presses her hands to her hips. “He’s in the box under my bed.”

Elle narrows her eyes. “And why was I not aware of this?”

“Daddy said it was our secret.” She grins.

“Did he, now?” Elle glances over at Easton, who’s talking on the phone in the corner of my living room.

Camille, Bekka, and Elle came over as soon as I got back this afternoon.

Easton had stopped by to pick up June, so the girls could spend some time with me. I think we were all shaken up at this point. Regardless of anyone’s feelings towards Blaine, he still didn’t deserve to be shot in the head like some vile execution.

Easton hangs up the phone and faces us with a small look of relief. “Grey just finished up. He’s heading this way.”

I reposition the blanket I have wrapped around me up to my neck. Camille and Bekka were knee deep in dough. They opted for chicken and dumplings for dinner and I didn’t have the energy to argue. Whatever they wanted to do to pass the time was fine by me. I was exhausted and the phone call I had with Blaine’s mother thirty minutes ago was heartbreaking and surprisingly typical.

I revealed the news that I had broken off the engagement before his death. She was devastated, but still managed to point out since we weren’t married I would in no way receive any compensation.

Like that’s what I’m concerned with. He wasn’t even cold yet.

I assured her I was not concerned and then she ended with how all her plans were uprooted for the entire weekend. Bless her heart.

This entire situation was just plain weird. The only explanation I can come up with is someone he was involved with through work. An angry client or an unstable person he put away at one point was on the run. I wasn’t sure, but one thing I was sure of, was Greyson’s innocence.

Ten minutes later Greyson arrives. His hair looks like he’s been running his hands through it for hours.

He doesn't speak, just hauls me close, kissing me on the lips with a gentle touch to my cheek. Dinner is quiet between the adults, but we all sit together and ate with June chatting up a storm. We needed her sweet nature to lighten the evening. She continued to use “sign language” while she spoke. She wasn’t actually using correct signs, but I joined in anyway. It warmed my heart she thought she was including me. Things may be rocky with the recent news of her biological parents, but Easton has been raising a beautiful, kind, and considerate human being. Add Elle to the mix and she’s going to be one successful little girl.

After dinner was cleaned up the girls left, and only Greyson, Easton, and I remained. I curl up on the couch and Greyson drops down next to me, bringing my legs over his lap.

“So, how’d it go?” Easton asks.

“Fine. I told them the truth. Why I was there and what happened.” Greyson lifts a shoulder. “I know they have a job to do. I get it. I get how things might look.”

“They don’t know about y’all's relationship yet.” Easton places his ankle over his knee. “I know you aren’t going to like what I have to say, but it’s the best for the time being.”

I have a hunch what he’s going to say, and I can feel my body tense. Greyson’s hand travels down my leg, massaging my calf.

“Might as well lay it all out,” he suggests.

Easton’s eyes meet mine, then move to Grey’s. “You two are going to have to cool it for a while.”

“Not happening,” Greyson grumbles, his hand clenching my calf.

“Brother, I’m trying to help you,” Easton argues.

“I understand that, but what if whoever did this to Blaine wants to hurt Tilly?”

“Grey.” I reach for his hand.

The last thing I want is to spend time apart, but I know Easton is right. At the moment, we look sketchy as hell, and I wouldn’t allow anything to fall on Greyson.

“He’s right.” I was so close I could almost count the gold flecks in his eyes. “I know it’s not ideal, but…”

“Ideal,” he scoffs, standing up from the couch.
