“I am tired, mom.” I sigh and plop down beside her.

“Me too.” She taps my leg and I turn to face her.

It hasn’t been that long since she kicked my father out. I knew she was still grieving a thirty year marriage that was flushed down the drain.

“I’m so sorry for what he did to you,” I tell her honestly. “I’ve been really angry at him.”

The day he barged into my meeting at the end of the season, acting like his job was to ensure I got the best. Bullshit. He wanted control, just like always. Control of my contract, my agents, my endorsements. For the first time in my life, I didn’t let him have it, and it turned ugly, fast.

“I’ll be ok, Grey. I got you boys, my June bug, and Ellie. My friends, a roof over my head and a hefty pile in the bank because my lawyer knew her stuff.”

She chuckles lightly. “I need to send Whitley a thank you basket for recommending her. She’s pretty savvy on divorces.”

Whitley works for a DA’s office in California and even though she didn’t have the label, she was just as sharp and cutthroat.

“I’m sure she’d love that.” I push to my feet. “I’m going to crash. You free tomorrow for lunch?”

“Sure. I’m assuming we need to discuss why you were being questioned at the police station.”

I run a hand through my hair. “Yeah, and a few other things that have recently unfolded.”

Like I’m retiring and plan on marrying Tilly Harper as soon as physically possible.

“Night, Grey.”

“Night, mom.”

I trudge up the stairs and fall into bed.

I didn't sleep a damn wink.

Chapter 48

Tilly

It had been four days. I’d went months without seeing Greyson. Went years without speaking verbal words to him, but just after four days of only seeing him through the office window once when he had his volunteer day, I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. I ached. My heart ached. And I hated that we had to do this. We sucked at timing. Always had. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less.

My day is almost over, and I’m exhausted. Blaine’s mom had been updating me with funeral arrangements and I felt like a terrible human being because I had zero desire to go.

I shut off my computer and grab my phone when I hear a familiar voice. I pause, thinking I was absolutely losing it when my suspicions were made correct.

“I can’t believe Frank still refuses to install lights in the parking lot. I’ve told him countless times it’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.”

Whitley casually walks through the door, looking just as professional as she did the courtroom.

Maroon pantsuit, paired with heeled boots and painted lips. The definition of head bitch in charge.

Whit. I sign because tears are clogging my throat as I rush around my desk and launch myself at her.

“I thought you had a no tears rule?” She muses.

I let out a sob that turns into laughter because, God, I miss her so much.

“All I’ve done is cry for the last two weeks,” I mumble as I wipe my eyes with the sleeve of my shirt. “I hate crying.”

“I know. You get that from me.” She pushes her brown hair over her shoulder. “You ready?”

“What are you even doing here?” I pick up my purse and shove my phone inside.
