“He’s going to leave, and you’ll be in the dust, Tillie. Guys like him don’t go for girls like you.”

I tried not to let the words sting. I highly considered turning around to do what, I don’t know. I didn’t have the chance. Because before I could even reply to Brad, I heard a distinctively British voice yelling right beside us.

“You’re a fool, man. A bloody fool. Get out of here. You don’t deserve any woman,” Leo spewed, two inches from Brad’s face, his jaw clenched. For a moment, I was certain there was going to be a brawl.

“You’ll pay,” Brad said, his face angry. Leo stood cockily, arms crossed in front of him. He smelled like his oaky cologne and sweat. My heart raced as Brad squared off for a second and then spun on his heel, heading to the door. I glanced around but didn’t see Scarlet anywhere. I was glad. I couldn’t handle another run-in.

“Are you okay?” Leo asked, putting a hand on my shoulder and softening once Brad was gone.

I nodded, fighting back the tears that had mostly subsided. My heart was pounding from the entire encounter.

Grace came rushing over at that moment, sweaty and smiling. “What’s going on? You two look like someone died,” she said, eyeing us.

“Nothing, it’s all good. I could just use a drink,” I said, silently willing Leo to stay quiet. I didn’t want to ruin her night or bring down the mood. Grace smiled, rushing to the bar to get another round at her insistence.

“We’ll talk about this later,” Leo whispered in my ear.

“I’m totally fine, I swear. Thank you for what you did,” I said. “But can we just forget about it? I want to have fun, and I don’t want to put a damper on Grace’s mood. Let’s just enjoy the night. Tell me, how was the dancing?”

“You missed it?” Leo asked, feigning disappointment. “Oh man, I’m shocked. I was basically the hero of the dance floor.”

“You might just have to head back out there to show me again,” I teased.

“I don’t know if I can show everyone up like that again,” he said. “But we’ll see. Get another drink in me, then maybe.”

And at that, Grace returned with three more drinks—enough to wash away the trauma that was Brad, the past, and the words he’d said I didn’t want to believe. But there weren’t enough drinks in the entire club to wash away what happened when I realized Grace’s face was panicked just fifteen minutes later when she returned to our table.

“You need to get out of here,” she ordered, staring right at Leo and me and gesturing toward the door.

Chapter Thirty-Four

“I know, we already saw Brad,” I said, reaching for my drink. So much for keeping it all from her.

“What?” she asked. I looked up after taking a sip. And then I realized that other than on social media, she hadn’t seen Brad in person. She probably wouldn’t be able to pick him out from the crowd.

“What were you talking about?” I asked, confused.
