“No,” I say to her. “Nothing you say is going to make us change our mind.”

She scowls and stalks past us. “So arrogant. Entitled. Bastards.”

“Tell us how you really feel,” Gray purrs, and he and Dylan start stalking her.

Falcon and I separate and walk around her in opposite directions, cutting off her exits.

“I will tell you how I really feel!” she shouts. “I didn’t do it. It wasn’t me. Your mother is an evil, evil, horrible human!” She points at me, but when Falcon gets too close, she whirls to him.

“And you, you just shut me out with a message from your lackeys. How dare you!”

Falcon dips his head but stops moving, focusing intently on her. “It was a horrible decision, and the only excuse I have is that I was trying my best to do what was right by the pack.”

She makes a feral sound and tosses her head back, that intricate braid swinging.

“You don't deserve me,” Onyx growls.

“We know,” I say with more remorse that I think I’ve ever felt. “We don't deserve Dylan or you.”

She whirls, and her head whips towards Dylan.

“I trusted you,” she says in a plaintive mewl.

It destroys me.

Dylan inhales on a shudder. The pain is excruciating. I can smell it, I can feel it, I can see it.

“I didn’t betray you, nor did I dump you. I didn’t conspire against you. Honestly, can’t you see how much I trusted you? How far I went to help you?”

Dylan reaches for her, but she slaps his hand away.

“I kept thinking about this moment, that you’d come for me, that you’d be different, be better, be more, and now we’re here, and I'm so, I'm so, I'm so angry!” She shouts.

“We’re sorry,” Falcon says. “We realise that now.”

She huffs. “Hazel said to give you another chance. She said you love me, but I don't believe that now.”

“Onyx-”

“I'm not finished talking,” Onyx snaps, cutting Gray off. “All right, so here’s how it’s going to go. You have five hours. If you can find me in the only place that feels like home to me, if you can bring me the food I love, if you know me well enough to be able to tell me the words I need to hear, and if you can give me an offer I can accept, I will give you this one chance.” She hesitates, then nods to herself. “But if you fail…I will walk away and rebuild my life without you.”

“I fell in love with you, Dylan, in the shadows. I told you I loved you. I tried to give you your pack back, and I succeeded. But,” she looks at Falcon, Grayson, and then me, “I love you, too.”

“Nyx-”

She holds up a hand. “I can’t hear your words because you’ll say something, and I’ll give in, and then I won’t ever know. So don't. Just prove to me you know me.”

The rainbow lights of the fields of flowers dance on her skin. Her chest is heaving, and she looks like she’s in pain, but she’s determined.

“A challenge, to prove ourselves?” Gray says with a high voice. “To prove we know you, that we love you?”

“Fine. And when we find you. When we bring you what you need, you will know that we’re not letting you go,” Falcon growls.

“Ever,” Grayson says with heat.

She takes a step, but I reach out and grab her hand and hold her back.

“When we find you, you will know that we’re more sorry than words can say, Onyx.”
